Morocco Beat Madagascar to Secure Historic Third CHAN Title

Morocco secured a record third TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) title with a thrilling 3-2 victory over Madagascar in a pulsating final at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani. Star striker Oussama Lamlaoui proved to be the difference-maker, scoring twice—including a stunning 40-yard strike—that solidified his status as the tournament’s top scorer with six goals.

The final kicked off at a frenetic pace, with Madagascar striking first just nine minutes in through Felicite Manohantsoa. However, Morocco quickly equalized with a goal from Youssef Mehri, assisted by Khalid Baba. Lamlaoui then put the Atlas Lions ahead, showcasing their attacking prowess.

Madagascar, displaying remarkable resilience, equalized through Toky Rakotondraibe, who capitalized on a defensive lapse. The Malagasy fans erupted in celebration, but the final word belonged to Lamlaoui. As Madagascar pushed for a winner, he unleashed a breathtaking 40-yard strike that sailed into the net, effectively settling Moroccan nerves.

Morocco’s victory not only earned them the gold medal and USD 3.5 million in prize money but also marked a significant moment in African football history. This triumph surpassed the Democratic Republic of Congo’s total of two titles, cementing Morocco’s dominance in the tournament.

Captain Mohamed Rabie Hrimat was named the TotalEnergies Man of the Competition, leading his team with consistent performances throughout the tournament. He contributed significantly with two goals and two assists, epitomizing the qualities of experience and leadership that guided Morocco to victory.

Oussama Lamlaoui’s brace in the final also secured him the Puma Top Scorer award, finishing the tournament with six goals. His scoring ability was crucial to Morocco’s success, having already found the net in the group stage and scored in the semi-final victory over Senegal.

His performances have not only highlighted his talent but also increased calls for his inclusion in Morocco’s senior national team. Coach Tarik Sektioui praised Lamlaoui’s ability to read the game and deliver in decisive moments, making him a key player in Morocco’s attacking strategy.

For Madagascar, reaching the final was a remarkable achievement, marking them as the first island nation and the 13th country overall to compete in a CAF senior final. Despite the heartbreak of defeat, their spirited journey captured the admiration of fans across the continent and showcased their potential for future success.
