FBNBank changes name to FirstBank Ghana

FBNBank Ghana, the Ghanaian subsidiary of FirstBank Nigeria (FBN) has changed its name to FirstBank Ghana.

The change in name from FBNBank Ghana to FirstBank Ghana, aligns with the FirstBank Group’s vision to be the leading international banking group in sub-Saharan Africa and Europe through a monolithic brand strategy.

According to the FirstBank Group, this strategy will result in better brand clarity, uniformity, and consistency for the benefit of the bank’s stakeholders, particularly its customers across its global footprints.

Adding that, it would contribute to the Group’s subsidiaries making greater contributions and impact in their markets.

Speaking at the occasion of the FirstBank Ghana Business Dinner to launch the bank’s new name on Thursday, May 2, 2024, Acting CEO of the FirstBank Group, Olusegun Alebiosu, quipped the change of name is a reaffirmation of the FirstBank Group’s commitment to Africa, and particularly Ghana, where the Group sees immense potential and opportunity in the Ghanaian market.

“FirstBank Ghana is our second biggest market in sub-Saharan Africa and offers considerable opportunities for us to deliver our brand promise and be a significant player and contributor to social and economic development.

“The name change, therefore, strengthens our position and places us on a much better pedestal to impact the Ghanaian market,” he posited.

“We reassure all our stakeholders that we are fully committed to the economic growth and development of Ghana and to empowering our customers by providing enhanced products, services and initiatives that support their diverse needs.

“Our focus on digital innovation, customer satisfaction, and operational excellence is stronger than ever, ensuring that we continue to build on the trust and confidence that you have always reposed in us,” he added.

Also speaking at the Business Dinner was the Governor of Bank of Ghana, Dr Ernest Addison, who congratulated the bank for changing its name from FBNBank to FirstBank Ghana.

Asserting that, the Central Bank was aware of the confusion of the bank’s name with First National Bank (FNB) Ghana and the subsequent impact on its marketing strategy.

“I congratulate the bank on changing its name to FirstBank Ghana, the BoG is aware of the confusion of the bank’s name with FNB Bank which is also an international bank and the impact on its marketing strategy,” he quipped.

“FirstBank Ghana, has been a distinguished bank since inception in 1884, it has been a customer-focused bank delivering excellent services to customers and ensuring accessibility to customers,” he posited.

Speaking further the Governor noted the BoG is committed to remaining vigilant in its oversight responsibilities to ensure financial stability in the country and curb financial crime which include cybercrime, insider dealing, money laundering, terrorism financing among others, ensuring that banks comply with regulatory guidelines so as to entrench trust in the financial sector.

Gracing the occasion was the Minister for Finance, Dr Mohammed Amin Adam, who remarked that FirstBank Ghana has long been a cornerstone of Ghana’s financial sector, contributing significantly to Ghana’s economic development and growth.

Adding that, the Bank’s commitment to financial inclusion, innovation, customer-centric approach, and adherence to the highest standards of banking have made it a trusted partner for businesses, entrepreneurs, and individuals alike.

“On this fast-evolving and challenging financial landscape, FirstBank Ghana’s presence is more critical than ever, providing stability, reliability, and opportunities for prosperity.

“The Bank is also well placed to support the country’s development agenda as it has done in years past, especially in the case of YouStart and Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs),” he added.

According to the CEO of FirstBank Ghana, Victor Yaw Asante, the bank’s overarching objective is to achieve the status of a first-choice bank in the country.

FirstBank Ghana is currently ranked as the number one bank and financial institution on Ghana’s Club 100 list, at the overall position of 10th.

Recently, the bank was named “Bank of the Year” at the 2nd Ghana Finance Focus Awards. In 2023, the bank won over 25 institutional and individual awards.

For the past 28 years of operating in Ghana, FirstBank Ghana has experienced remarkable growth, achieving strong financial performance and expanding its accessibility to customers.
