Verstappen Aims for Record Fourth Canadian GP Win
Max Verstappen is gearing up to chase a record fourth consecutive victory at the Canadian Grand Prix this weekend, hoping for a seamless race to alleviate concerns over a potential suspension following a controversial incident in Spain.
The four-time world champion enters Sunday’s race with a critical eye on his racing license. After being penalized for a collision with George Russell at the Spanish Grand Prix, Verstappen knows that accumulating just one more penalty point will result in an automatic ban from the upcoming Austrian Grand Prix—an outcome Red Bull consultant Helmut Marko described as “catastrophic.”
Verstappen, currently third in the drivers’ championship with 137 points, trails McLaren’s Oscar Piastri (186 points) and Lando Norris (176 points). Reflecting on the Spanish race, Verstappen admitted, “Barcelona was disappointing for us. Although we gave it everything, it was not the way we would have liked the race to turn out.”
Looking forward to Canada, Verstappen expressed enthusiasm for the unique track layout at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, highlighting its old-school kerbs and numerous overtaking opportunities. “We are looking forward to Canada; the track is unique,” he stated.
As Verstappen and Red Bull aim to close the gap on McLaren, Mercedes and Ferrari will also be seeking a boost at this high-speed circuit. Mercedes technical boss James Allison noted, “It’s a track where we’ve tended to go well in the past.” The Silver Arrows have struggled this season, failing to secure a win since the Las Vegas Grand Prix last year.
Lance Stroll, the local hero, is set to return after undergoing a medical procedure to alleviate wrist and hand pain, and he will undoubtedly receive strong support from the home crowd.
Meanwhile, seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton, who has yet to secure a podium finish this year, faces pressure as he navigates the challenges of his current car. Hamilton is still a fan favorite in Canada, where he claimed his first victory in 2007, but will need a significant turnaround to regain his competitive edge.
As the Haas team prepares to celebrate their 200th race with a throwback grey livery, all eyes will be on Verstappen as he seeks to make history and secure a crucial win in what promises to be an exciting Canadian Grand Prix weekend.
