Black Stars Secure Crucial Win Over Mali in World Cup Qualifiers

Ghana boosted their hopes of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a vital 1-0 victory over Mali at the Accra Sports Stadium on Monday night. The win not only earned the Black Stars three important points but also helped them maintain a three-point lead at the top of Group I.

The match started as a tense affair, with Mali threatening through a couple of set pieces in the opening minutes. However, Ghana gradually found their rhythm, dominating possession as the first half progressed. The hosts had several promising moments, particularly from the dynamic duo of Mohammed Kudus and Jordan Ayew, but struggled to test Mali’s goalkeeper, Djigui Diarra.

Ghana’s best opportunity in the first half came late when Kudus made a strong run down the right and delivered a low cross to Antoine Semenyo. Unfortunately, Semenyo’s attempt to turn and shoot resulted in a miss, keeping the scoreline level at halftime.

The deadlock was finally broken early in the second half. In the 49th minute, a corner kick from Jordan Ayew caused chaos in the Mali defense as Diarra misjudged the ball, allowing Alexander Djiku to bundle it home from close range. The stadium erupted as the Black Stars took the lead.

In response to going behind, Mali made a double substitution just before the hour mark, bringing on Gaoussou Diarra and Dorgeles Nene. The Eagles looked to find an equalizer, and Nene nearly leveled the score in the 79th minute with a long-range shot that just missed the target.

Despite a few late attempts from Mali, Ghana’s defense held firm, showcasing their resilience compared to previous matches. The Black Stars’ ability to maintain their lead secured a crucial three points and solidified their path toward qualification for next year’s tournament.
