  • GSE Closes Mixed as Composite Index Falls 88.67 Points Despite Financial Stocks Gaining

The Ghana Stock Exchange ended Thursday’s trading session on a mixed note as losses across several heavily traded counters pulled the broader market lower, even as financial stocks extended gains and maintained one of their strongest performances in recent years.

The GSE Composite Index fell by 88.67 points, moderating its year-to-date return to 71.03%, while the GSE Financial Stocks Index moved in the opposite direction, gaining 13.73 points to lift its year-to-date return to 69.73%, according to market commentary from SIC Brokerage.

The divergence highlights an increasingly selective equity market in which strong gains in parts of the financial sector are being offset by corrections in telecommunications, insurance and other previously advancing stocks.

The official market list for the August 27 session shows a total of 2,889,983 shares changing hands across the main market, exchange-traded fund and Ghana Alternative Market, with total value traded reaching GH¢15.96 million. Ordinary shares accounted for 2,416,258 shares valued at GH¢15.60 million.

MTN Ghana once again dominated activity, accounting for 1,954,695 shares worth approximately GH¢13.49 million.

The telecoms company nevertheless came under selling pressure, closing at GH¢6.90 from a previous GH¢7.00, representing a decline of 1.43%. MTN Ghana alone accounted for roughly 84.54% of the value of ordinary shares traded, reinforcing its outsized influence on both liquidity and market direction.

Market breadth reflected the weakness in the broader index, with decliners outnumbering gainers.

Dannex Ayrton Starwin emerged as the strongest performer on the main market, climbing from GH¢1.67 to GH¢1.83, a gain of 9.58%. The pharmaceutical company recorded turnover of 51,000 shares valued at GH¢93,330.00.

Ecobank Transnational Incorporated also advanced, gaining 2.76% from GH¢1.81 to GH¢1.86, while GCB Bank edged 0.23% higher to GH¢39.09 from GH¢39.00.

On the Ghana Alternative Market, Digicut Production & Advertising gained 9.09%, closing at GH¢0.24 from GH¢0.22.

Those gains were insufficient to offset broader selling.

Enterprise Group recorded one of the steepest declines of the session, dropping 8.74% from GH¢6.75 to GH¢6.16. The counter traded 77,742 shares valued at approximately GH¢481,221.45.

SIC Insurance also weakened sharply, falling from GH¢5.44 to GH¢5.00, equivalent to a decline of 8.09%, on 61,805 shares worth about GH¢314,018.12.

Trust Bank Gambia lost 8.33%, closing at GH¢1.21 from GH¢1.32, while Clydestone Ghana fell 7.41% from GH¢6.48 to GH¢6.00.

CAL Bank declined 1.35% to GH¢0.73, Standard Chartered Bank Ghana slipped 0.16% to GH¢69.89, and MTN Ghana’s 1.43% decline added further pressure to the broader market.

On the GAX, Intravenous Infusions also moved lower, falling from GH¢0.80 to GH¢0.76, equivalent to 5.00%, on a comparatively large volume of 434,336 shares worth GH¢328,577.78.

That took the overall breadth across the main and alternative markets to four gainers against eight decliners, confirming that Thursday’s weakness was relatively broad even though many counters finished unchanged.

Outside MTN Ghana, Enterprise Group generated about GH¢481,221.45, GCB Bank recorded GH¢343,215.90, SIC Insurance produced GH¢314,018.12, Kasapreko traded GH¢207,463.00, and Clydestone generated GH¢189,422.64.

Standard Chartered added another GH¢190,590.03 in turnover.

On the GAX, Intravenous Infusions was the clear liquidity leader, accounting for the majority of alternative-market turnover, followed by Hords with 36,696 shares valued at GH¢32,298.43.

NewGold recorded only a single unit traded at GH¢462.39, leaving equities overwhelmingly responsible for the day’s activity.

The mixed performance illustrates an important feature of Ghana’s equity rally in 2026.

With both major indices still carrying year-to-date returns close to or above 70.00%, some individual counters are increasingly vulnerable to profit-taking and valuation corrections after substantial earlier gains.

Thursday’s decline in the Composite Index does not erase the strength of the market’s year-to-date performance, but it highlights how quickly weakness in large and liquid stocks can affect the benchmark.

Its nearly of turnover dwarfed activity in every other stock, meaning shifts in investor positioning around the telecom counter can significantly affect overall trading value and sentiment.

At the same time, the positive movement in the Financial Stocks Index suggests that demand for selected banking stocks remains resilient despite weakness elsewhere.

GCB’s modest gain and ETI’s stronger advance helped support the financial benchmark even as CAL, Standard Chartered and SIC moved lower.

The result is a market that remains exceptionally strong on a year-to-date basis but is becoming increasingly differentiated at stock level.

Investors are no longer simply buying into a broad rally. Thursday’s session suggests greater discrimination between individual companies, with earnings expectations, valuations and profit-taking increasingly determining where capital moves.

For the Ghana Stock Exchange, that selectivity may become more pronounced as the market attempts to consolidate the extraordinary gains accumulated so far in 2026.

The key question is whether financial stocks and other remaining gainers can provide enough support to keep the broader rally intact when heavyweight counters such as MTN Ghana come under pressure.
