WAFCON 2024: Sports Ministry Rewards Black Queens with $2,000 for Quarter-Final Achievement
The Ghanaian national women’s football team, the Black Queens, has been awarded a $2,000 cash prize by the Ministry of Sports and Recreation for their impressive feat of reaching the quarter-finals of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) 2024.
The journey to the last eight was not without its challenges. The Black Queens began the tournament on a shaky note, suffering a 2-0 defeat against the defending champions, South Africa. They followed this with a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Mali. However, the team turned their fortunes around in a decisive final group match, overpowering Tanzania with a commanding 4-1 victory, marking their first quarter-final appearance since 2016.
The Ministry expressed pride in the team’s qualification and hopes that the financial reward will serve as further motivation for the players as they continue their campaign.
Looking ahead, Ghana is set to face Algeria on Saturday, August 19, for a coveted spot in the semi-finals of the tournament. With the momentum on their side, the Black Queens are poised to make a significant impact in the competition.
The support from the Ministry and the spirit of the team could be the perfect combination for a successful run in WAFCON 2024.
