MTN Group Discloses Cybersecurity Breach Affecting Customer Data In Selected Markets

Pan-African telecoms giant, MTN Group, has reported a cybersecurity incident which led to unauthorised access to personal information of some of its customers across certain markets.

In a statement released late Thursday, the Group noted that its critical infrastructure, including core network systems, billing platforms and financial services infrastructure, remain secure and fully operational.

“Our core network, billing systems and financial services infrastructure remain secure and fully operational,” MTN assured, stressing that its core platforms and services were not compromised.

According to the Johannesburg-based telco, the breach involved an unidentified third party who claimed to have accessed data linked to certain parts of its systems. However, it added that there is currently no evidence suggesting that customers’ accounts and mobile money wallets have been directly affected.

“At this stage, we do not have any information to suggest that customers’ accounts and wallets have been directly compromised,” MTN said.

While the Group declined to disclose the specific markets impacted by the breach, its reference to having notified the South African Police Service and the Hawks suggests that its South African unit may be among those affected.

MTN added that it is engaging with relevant law enforcement agencies in other affected jurisdictions and is in the process of notifying impacted customers in line with local regulatory requirements.

“We are in the process of notifying affected customers in compliance with local legal and regulatory obligations. As a reminder, customers are encouraged to remain vigilant and follow regular security measures,” the statement read.

The latest breach adds to the growing list of cybersecurity incidents in South Africa’s telecoms sector, following a recent ransomware attack on Cell C which also compromised sensitive data.

MTN said it continues to assess the situation and will provide updates as more information becomes available.
