Ghana Prisons Director-General Commits to Revamping Sports for Inmates and Officers

The Director-General of the Ghana Prisons Service, Mrs. Patience Baffoe-Bonnie, has pledged to prioritize sports as a vital tool for enhancing the image of the Prisons Service and fostering personal development among both officers and inmates.

During a meeting with a delegation from the Ghana Armwrestling Federation (GAF), led by President Charles Osei Asibey, Mrs. Baffoe-Bonnie emphasized the transformative power of sports. “Sports contribute immensely to building individuals physically and mentally,” she stated, drawing from her own experiences in athletics. “It has disciplined me, built my confidence, and provided a platform for success.”

The Director-General highlighted ongoing collaborations with various authorities to encourage active participation in sports within the Prisons Service, aiming to uncover and nurture talent among inmates and staff alike. “This transformational plan will serve as a cornerstone for the successful reintegration of prisoners, equipping them with essential skills for the future,” she added.

President Asibey echoed her sentiments, recalling the Prisons Service’s historical prowess in sports, which produced notable athletes like Felix Aboagye and Eric Nkansah. He expressed optimism that a renewed focus on sports could lead to the development of national and continental champions. “Revamping sports in the service will not only serve public relations and rebranding purposes but can also generate income for the Service,” he remarked.

The meeting concluded with a mutual agreement to establish an armwrestling club composed of both officers and inmates to dominate the local scene. The Ghana Prisons Service has appointed Mrs. Baffoe-Bonnie as a patron of the Ghana Armwrestling Federation, further solidifying the partnership.
