Women Empowerment: DBG Reaffirms Commitment to Supporting Women-led Businesses at International Women’s Day Outreach
Deputy CEO of Development Bank Ghana (DBG), Michael Mensah-Baah, has underscored the Bank’s unwavering commitment to supporting women-led businesses, emphasizing its role in fostering their growth from micro-enterprises to established corporate entities.
Speaking at a special outreach initiative at the Design and Technology Institute (DTI) to commemorate the 2025 International Women’s Day on the theme “Accelerate Action for Gender Equality”, Mr Mensah-Baah stated, “Right from the beginning, DBG is going to be part of this journey with these women who are here, who will one day work with DBG or partner with DBG when they require funding and technical assistance for their businesses.”
He highlighted the institution’s strategic focus on empowering women-led businesses, acknowledging their unique challenges, particularly in financial literacy.
“One of DBG’s key impact areas is how we support women-led businesses to grow and thrive. We believe that to change the discourse of the country, we need to ensure that part of our efforts in supporting the private sector is focused on how we are able to support women-led businesses. Women-led businesses face specific challenges that, if addressed through traditional methods, may not necessarily yield the desired benefits. And so one of the ways we believe we can support women-led businesses is through financial literacy,” he noted.
Mr Mensah-Baah further stressed the importance of technical and vocational education in Ghana’s economic transformation, saying, “DBG recognizes the critical role of technical and vocational education in shaping Ghana’s future workforce. By supporting young women in this space, we are breaking barriers and creating pathways for economic empowerment. This initiative is more than just mentorship; it’s about inspiring the next generation of female leaders in the industry.”
As part of the outreach, DBG staff engaged students in mentorship and coaching sessions, offering career insights and encouraging them to explore opportunities in technical and vocational education.
The team also reaffirmed DBG’s commitment to skills development by considering potential sponsorships for additional female students in the upcoming academic year.
DBG, through this initiative, is contributing to the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly:
- SDG 4 (Quality Education): Supporting access to skills development and training.
- SDG 5 (Gender Equality): Promoting equal opportunities for women in male-dominated fields.
- SDG 8 (Decent Work & Economic Growth): Preparing young women for sustainable careers.
DBG’s International Women’s Day special outreach initiative at DTI aligns with its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) focus on women and children, building on its 2024 sponsorship of 10 female trainees at the institute.
DBG remains dedicated to fostering a more inclusive and equitable business environment for women entrepreneurs in Ghana.
