  • NorvanReports hosts a special X Space on ‘Ananse Stories about the Economy of Ghana’

NorvanReports, in collaboration with the Economic Governance Platform, will host a special X Space discussion on Sunday, April 12, 2026, on the theme “Ananse Stories about the Economy of Ghana”, as debate intensifies over the true state of the country’s recovery.

The session, scheduled for 7:00pm GMT on @NorvanReports, will feature Joe Jackson, Chief Executive Officer of Dalex Finance, with Norvan Acquah-Hayford as host, according to the event flyer.

The discussion comes at a moment when Ghana’s economic narrative is becoming more contested. On one side, the macroeconomic headlines have turned noticeably more positive. Inflation has slowed sharply, the cedi has shown greater stability, and recent growth data has suggested that the economy entered 2026 on a firmer footing. NorvanReports recently reported that Ghana’s economy opened 2026 with 7.5 per cent growth, driven largely by the services sector, although the report also noted how much of the expansion still rests on a narrow set of sectoral drivers.

There have been other signs of improving sentiment. Moody’s this week revised Ghana’s outlook to positive from stable, citing easing domestic financing pressures and improved fiscal conditions, even while keeping the sovereign rating at Caa1. That shift has reinforced the view among some policymakers and market watchers that the country’s recovery story is gaining traction.

Yet that more upbeat reading is far from universally accepted. Joe Jackson has been among the more prominent voices urging caution, warning that Ghana’s recent gains may amount to an “illusion of progress” if they are not matched by deeper structural repair. In a recent NorvanReports story, he argued that headline improvements risk masking unresolved weaknesses underneath the surface of the economy.

That tension is likely to sit at the heart of today Sunday’s conversation. The title itself, Ananse Stories about the Economy of Ghana, suggests a probing look at whether parts of the current economic narrative are being overstated, selectively told, or detached from the experience of businesses and households. In Ghanaian political and social discourse, invoking “Ananse stories” usually signals scepticism towards neat or convenient explanations, and in this case the target appears to be the widening gap between macroeconomic optimism and lived economic reality.

That gap has become harder to ignore. While inflation remains low by recent standards, fresh pressure is beginning to build from higher fuel costs and renewed imported-price risks. NorvanReports reported this week that IC Research expects inflation to edge up to 3.4 per cent in April from 3.2 per cent in March, driven in part by rising domestic fuel prices linked to global energy-market disruptions and a modest weakening of the cedi.

The currency story, too, remains more delicate than some of the recent celebration suggests. NorvanReports earlier warned that the cedi could come under renewed strain from higher crude prices, even as reserves improve and inflation cools. That means one of the key pillars of the current confidence story may still be vulnerable to external shocks.

Recent debate around Joe Jackson’s own interventions has also added to the relevance of the upcoming programme. His remarks on exchange-rate retention and the structure of Ghana’s mineral earnings have already drawn a formal response from the Ghana Chamber of Mines, which challenged aspects of his methodology while acknowledging the broader importance of the debate. That exchange has helped frame Jackson not simply as a commentator, but as one of the more provocative voices currently testing the assumptions behind Ghana’s economic messaging.

Against that backdrop, Sunday’s X Space is likely to go beyond a simple review of recent data points. The more important issue is whether Ghana’s apparent stabilisation can translate into a stronger and more broadly felt recovery, one that reaches firms, consumers and productive sectors rather than remaining concentrated in headline indicators and policy talking points.

For NorvanReports and EGP, the programme fits squarely into a wider effort to create space for harder economic conversations: not just whether the numbers look better, but whether the story behind the numbers is being told honestly. And with Joe Jackson as the sole guest, the event is likely to deliver a more pointed and uninterrupted critique of the narratives currently shaping public understanding of Ghana’s economy.
The special edition X Space will be held on Sunday, April 12, 2026 at 7:00pm GMT on @NorvanReports, with Joe Jackson, CEO of Dalex Finance, as guest and Norvan Acquah-Hayford as host.
