World Bank reaffirms commitment to Ghana amid anti-LGTBQ+ legislative controversy

The World Bank Group has confirmed its continued partnership with Ghana despite the recent passage of the Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill by Parliament.

Speculation had arisen suggesting that the World Bank Group might reduce aid and development assistance to Ghana due to concerns about the bill’s potential financial implications.

However, the World Bank clarified that it does not consider the passage of the bill as a reason to alter its cooperation with Ghana on development programs.

A spokesperson of the Betton Wood Institution emphasized the longstanding and productive relationship between the World Bank and Ghana, indicating that the institution remains committed to its partnership with the Republic of Ghana.

Regarding inquiries about the bill, the World Bank stated that it generally does not comment on specific legislation, especially bills that have not yet been signed into law.

As of now, it remains uncertain whether the World Bank will take any punitive measures if the bill is fully enacted.
