Ghana Emerges as a Sports Hub: President Akufo-Addo Highlights Infrastructure Gains

In a resounding testament to Ghana’s growing stature in international sports, President Nana Akufo-Addo expressed his pride in the nation’s enhanced facilities during his final State of the Nation Address on January 3, 2025.

The President underscored the significant strides made in sports infrastructure, which are pivotal to establishing Ghana as a premier destination for global athletic events.

Akufo-Addo highlighted the government’s ambitious initiative to construct over 150 AstroTurf pitches across the country and rehabilitate existing sports venues. These developments were instrumental in the successful hosting of the 13th African Games in Accra, an event that brought together more than 13,000 athletes and officials from across the continent from March 8 to 23, 2024.

“The construction of these pitches and the renovation of our stadia have elevated Ghana’s profile in international sports,” Akufo-Addo stated. “We successfully hosted the 2023 All African Games against all odds, showcasing our capabilities on a grand stage.”

The 2023 All African Games marked a historic moment for Ghana as it achieved an impressive medal tally of 69, further solidifying the nation’s commitment to sporting excellence. A significant investment of $195 million was dedicated to enhancing infrastructure, including the newly constructed Borteyman Sports Complex and the completion of the University of Ghana Stadium.

As the nation looks forward, the President’s vision of a robust sporting framework aims not only to foster local talent but also to attract international competition. With these advancements, Ghana is poised to continue its ascent as a notable hub for sports in Africa and beyond.
