Kejetia Market Management Asked to Step Aside Amid Mismanagement Probe
The Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council (ARCC) has directed the management of Kejetia Market in Kumasi to step aside to allow for investigations into allegations of mismanagement.
The directive follows concerns raised over the administration of the Kumasi City Markets Limited, which manages the Kejetia facility.
A statement from the ARCC indicated that the council had previously engaged the market’s management and the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) over pressing issues, including sanitation, unpaid utility bills, and general service delivery.
To facilitate investigations, a three-member interim committee has been appointed to oversee the market’s operations. The committee is chaired by Prince Ofori-Atta, with Amoah Prince Amoako handling operations, while Nana Prempeh Amankwaa takes charge of security.
Kejetia Market, the largest trading hub in the Ashanti Region, has faced persistent challenges such as defaulting on electricity payments, poor fire preparedness, and inadequate sanitation management.
The ARCC’s intervention aims to ensure accountability and improve conditions at the market while addressing concerns raised by traders and other stakeholders.
