Ghana’s Galamsey Challenge: Coach Otto Addo Balances Environmental Concerns with AFCON Ambitions

Ghana’s Head Coach, Otto Addo, has labeled the devastation caused by galamsey to the country’s water bodies as a significant concern. Despite this pressing issue, he emphasized that his team’s primary focus is on securing a victory against Sudan in their upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

In recent weeks, citizens in Accra have taken to the streets to protest, urging the government to halt mining activities in forested areas and along water bodies. One such demonstration, led by passionate activists, is currently entering its second day.

During the announcement of the Black Stars squad for the upcoming matches, Otto was questioned about the galamsey crisis. He stated, “I think it’s a serious problem—a very serious problem. But we have to do our job and focus on that.”

He reflected on the distractions he faced, admitting, “There are a lot of things that have also distracted me; I’ve even questioned myself, wondering what I could have done better. If, let’s say, I have an accident, there’s nothing I can do about it. But we need to concentrate on the task at hand.”

For Otto, the priority is clear: “To be honest, it’s about focusing on Sudan and nothing else. Once we secure a win, then we can discuss other topics.”

Ghana is set to host Sudan at the Accra Sports Stadium on Thursday, October 10, 2024, in the third round of qualifiers for next year’s Africa Cup of Nations, which will be held in Morocco. Just four days later, the Black Stars will travel to Libya to compete in the fourth round of qualifiers.
