2026 FIFA World Cup: Canada Rescue Historic First-Ever World Cup Point Against Bosnia and Herzegovina
Co-hosts Canada earned their first-ever point at a FIFA World Cup after battling back to secure a 1-1 draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina in an entertaining Group B clash in Toronto on Friday night.
The Canadians were unable to match the winning start made by fellow co-hosts Mexico earlier in the tournament, but a late strike from substitute Cyle Larin ensured the home side made history in front of a passionate crowd.
Bosnia and Herzegovina looked set to claim all three points after taking a first-half lead through Jovo Lukic and defending resolutely for long spells of the encounter.
Canada started brightly and nearly found an early breakthrough in the 17th minute when a loose ball fell kindly for Jonathan David inside the box. However, the Juventus striker was denied by Bosnia goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj, who produced a sharp low save.
The visitors struck four minutes later from a well-worked corner kick. Ivan Basic delivered an inviting ball into the area, and after a flick-on by Sead Kolasinac, Lukic glanced a header into the net to give the Dragons a 1-0 advantage.
Canada pushed hard for an equaliser before halftime, but Bosnia’s disciplined defence held firm. Tanitoluwa Oluwaseyi squandered a promising chance midway through the half, firing high and wide after being played into space on the right side of the area.
The hosts continued their attacking pressure after the restart and came agonisingly close to levelling in the 53rd minute. Richie Laryea burst through on goal and beat Vasilj with his effort, only for Kolasinac to recover brilliantly and divert the ball onto the underside of the crossbar.
Moments later Bosnia threatened at the other end, but Canadian goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau reacted quickly off his line to deny Ermedin Demirovic.
Canada continued to pile on the pressure, and another opportunity arrived midway through the second half when Oluwaseyi’s header beat Vasilj, only for defender Nikola Katic to clear dramatically off the line.
The breakthrough finally came in the 79th minute. Substitute Promise David produced a clever touch to set up Larin, who controlled superbly before turning and volleying home via a slight deflection to spark celebrations inside the stadium.
The result leaves both teams with a point apiece in Group B heading into their next matches. Bosnia and Herzegovina will face Switzerland in Los Angeles on June 18, while Canada take on Qatar in Vancouver on June 19 as they continue their quest for a place in the knockout stages.
