Asamoah Gyan raises over GHS 340,000 for charity projects at Legendry book launch

The launch of Asamoah Gyan’s ‘LeGyandary’ autobiography raised over GHS 340,000 during an auction of the first 50 copies of the book as the President of the Republic Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo launched the biography of the former Black Stars striker, at the Kempinski Gold Coast Hotel in Accra on Saturday April 30.

Ernest Ofori Sarpong, the chief executive officer of the Special Group of Companies and the chairman of the event, paid GHC100,000 for the first auctioned copy.

Kennedy Agyapong, Member of Parliament for Assin Central, also made a GHC100,000 offer to acquire the second copy.

Kurt Okraku, president of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), also acquired a copy of the book at the auction for GHC50,000.

Other notable individuals who purchased copies of the auctioned book were businessman Freedom Jacob Caesar, Minister of Trade and Industry, Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, Tony Oteng Gyasi, former minister of Tourism, and CEO of Kumasi Asante Kotoko, Nana Yaw Amponsah.

Speaking at the event, Gyan said proceeds from the auction will be used by his organisation to continue its charitable activities.

He said the book addressed several untold stories about his career that will serve as an inspiration to young and rising footballers in the country.

“We have been engaged in several charity projects and the funds generated from this auction would help us continue with those projects. This is a script I put together to inspire the teeming young and upcoming footballers who are bent on making it through football,” said Gyan.

The book has officially been released online and onsite and it cost 200 cedis to get a copy.

In attendance was a number of the country’s former and current footballers, Members of Parliament, Ministers, Diplomats, business leaders and fans of the former Black Stars captain.

There were also citations from Gyan – read by the General Secretary of the Professional Footballers Association of Ghana (PFAG) – in honour of Sly Tetteh, J.E Sarpong and Cecil Jones Attuquayefio.
