Prosper Ogum Urges Fans to Stay Supportive as Kotoko Aims for Title in Ghana Premier League
Asante Kotoko head coach Prosper Narteh Ogum has urged fans to remain positive and supportive as the team navigates a critical phase in the Ghana Premier League season. His appeal comes after a disappointing 1-1 draw against Bechem United at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on Sunday, which saw the Porcupine Warriors drop vital points in their quest for the title.
Kotoko had hoped to solidify their position at the top of the table but allowed Bechem to equalize in the 69th minute after initially taking the lead. A late penalty converted by Albert Amoah salvaged a point for Kotoko, but the team’s performance left much to be desired.
After the match, Ogum expressed his frustration, attributing the team’s lackluster display to a deficiency in intensity. “We looked slow today. I don’t know if it’s due to fatigue, but before the game, they were physically and mentally okay. However, their movement didn’t reflect that,” he said.
The coach highlighted Kotoko’s struggles in midfield, which allowed Bechem to gain momentum. “We couldn’t dominate the middle as we usually do, and that gave Bechem the edge,” Ogum added.
Despite the setback, Ogum emphasized the need for unity and emotional support from the fans. “If the players feel the fans are behind them, it becomes easier to bounce back. But if they sense the support is fading, doubts begin to creep in,” he explained.
Acknowledging the fans’ disappointment, he pointed out that recent performances had raised expectations. “I understand the fans are upset. Since we returned to Baba Yara, we’ve given them good football and results. This is exactly when we need them the most,” he said.
Looking ahead, Kotoko faces a challenging away fixture against Accra Lions, knowing that another slip-up could jeopardize their title ambitions. Meanwhile, Bechem United will prepare for a crucial match against Bibiani GoldStars, which could also impact the title race.
