AfCFTA Secretary-General Mourns Ghana Helicopter Crash Victims

The Secretary-General of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), Wamkele Mene, has extended condolences following the fatal military helicopter crash in Ghana’s Ashanti Region that claimed the lives of eight individuals, including two senior cabinet ministers.

Among the deceased were Ghana’s Minister for Defence, Hon. Edward Omane Boamah, and the Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Hon. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed. The officials were reportedly en route to an official engagement when the incident occurred.

In a statement issued by the AfCFTA Secretariat on Thursday, Mr Mene conveyed his “deep sorrow” over the tragedy and expressed solidarity with the Government and Armed Forces of Ghana during what has been declared a national mourning period.

“We mourn alongside the people of Ghana and extend our deepest sympathies to the families enduring this painful loss,” the Secretary-General said. “The candle may go out, but the memory of its light will remain. May those who lost their lives be remembered with honour, and may they rest in peace.”

The crash has prompted widespread tributes across the continent, reflecting the stature of the individuals involved and the significance of the incident within the region’s political and diplomatic circles.

The Secretariat’s message further reaffirmed its commitment to stand with Ghana, which hosts the AfCFTA headquarters in Accra.
