- Pension Funds, Institutions Take Up Access Bank Ghana Shares In 7.44% Sale
Access Bank PLC has completed the sale of a 7.44% shareholding in Access Bank Ghana PLC, in a transaction aimed at deepening local ownership and improving liquidity in the bank’s shares on the Ghana Stock Exchange.
Access Bank Ghana announced that its parent company sold 12,085,318 ordinary shares in the Ghanaian subsidiary, representing 7.44% of the bank’s issued ordinary shares. The transaction was completed on July 15, 2026, and executed on the Ghana Stock Exchange after securing the required regulatory approvals, including a no-objection from the Bank of Ghana.
The transaction attracted participation from a diversified pool of investors, including pension funds, institutional investors and high-net-worth individuals. Access Bank Ghana said the level of interest reflected continued confidence in the bank’s long-term prospects.
The sale is significant for Ghana’s capital market because it increases the free float of one of the banking sector’s listed counters and broadens participation in the ownership of Access Bank Ghana. Greater local shareholding can support market depth, improve price discovery and enhance investor participation in the bank’s future growth.
Commenting on the transaction, Pearl Nkrumah, Managing Director of Access Bank Ghana, said the sale was consistent with the bank’s strategic priorities.
“This transaction reflects our continued commitment to deepening local ownership and liquidity in our shares, consistent with the strategic priorities. We remain focused on converting the scale we have built into sustained value for all our stakeholders,” she said.
The completion of the sale also comes at a time when investor interest in listed banking stocks has strengthened, supported by improved profitability across parts of the financial sector, easing macroeconomic pressures and renewed confidence in selected equities on the Ghana Stock Exchange.
For Access Bank Ghana, the entry or increased participation of pension funds and institutional investors could help strengthen the bank’s shareholder base by bringing in investors with longer-term capital and governance expectations.
The transaction also signals continuing confidence in the local banking industry, particularly among institutional investors looking for exposure to financial services, dividend potential and balance-sheet growth.
Access Bank Ghana is a full-service commercial bank listed on the Ghana Stock Exchange and forms part of Access Group, one of Africa’s largest banking groups. The bank provides services to corporate, commercial, retail and public-sector clients across Ghana.
The deal was advised and executed by IC Securities Ghana Limited, with the announcement issued by Helen De Cardi Nelson, Company Secretary of Access Bank Ghana.
For the market, the key implication is that Access Bank Ghana’s public float and trading liquidity should improve following the transfer of shares from the parent company to a wider investor base.
That could make the stock more attractive to institutional investors seeking positions in listed financial-sector counters, especially where liquidity has historically been a constraint.
The transaction does not change the bank’s operating strategy, but it strengthens the market dimension of its growth story. With more shares in public hands, Access Bank Ghana will face increased investor scrutiny but also potentially benefit from broader market participation and improved valuation visibility.
The parent company’s decision to sell part of its holding through the exchange also reinforces the role of the Ghana Stock Exchange as a platform for orderly secondary market transactions in major listed companies.
For Access Bank Ghana, the task now is to convert investor confidence into sustained shareholder value through earnings growth, prudent risk management, customer expansion and disciplined execution.
The sale of the 7.44% stake therefore marks more than a shareholder adjustment. It is a capital market event that broadens local ownership, improves market liquidity and positions Access Bank Ghana for deeper engagement with Ghanaian institutional investors.
