Gov’t Eyes Strategic Partner to Revamp AirtelTigo – Communications Minister Discloses

The Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, has disclosed that government is in active negotiations with a strategic partner to take over and revamp the operations of AirtelTigo.

According to the Minister, the discussions are part of broader efforts by government to improve service delivery in the telecommunications sector and enhance competition among industry players.

“For the first time I’ll put out that government is currently in negotiations with a strategic partner to revamp and take over AT. We’ve started those conversations. We’re giving a 60-day window for the completion of those negotiations so that by the end of Q3 we could see a full rollout of the improved services on AT,” Mr. George revealed.

He made the disclosure during a meeting with Chief Executive Officers and technical teams of MTN, Telecel, and AirtelTigo. The engagement was convened to address mounting concerns over deteriorating network quality across the country.

Persistent Quality Issues

The meeting also featured a presentation by the National Communications Authority (NCA) on its latest nationwide quality of service (QoS) assessment. The study, which covered 48 localities, was initiated in response to a surge in consumer complaints and revealed widespread lapses in service delivery, particularly in fast-growing urban centres and key regional towns.

Despite the robust infrastructure investments by telecom operators, subscribers continue to grapple with persistent call drops, slow data speeds and patchy coverage.

Reacting to the findings, Mr. George called for swift remedial measures and stronger collaboration between the government and industry players to address the challenges.

Revamping AirtelTigo to Boost Sector Competition

The proposed overhaul of AirtelTigo forms part of government’s broader strategy to create a more competitive and efficient telecom landscape.

Government took full ownership of AirtelTigo in 2021, following the transfer of shares from Indian multinational Bharti Airtel. However, the company has struggled to regain market traction amid intensifying competition and operational constraints.

Mr. George reiterated government’s commitment to ensuring that every Ghanaian, irrespective of location, has access to reliable and high-quality telecommunications services.

“The ultimate goal is to ensure improved quality of service for all. Revamping AT is just one of several steps we are taking to improve sector performance,” he stated.
