CHAN 2024: Uganda and Algeria Advance to Quarter-Finals

Uganda and Algeria secured their spots in the quarter-finals of the TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) PAMOJA 2024 following a dramatic final round of matches in Group C. Uganda’s thrilling 3-3 draw with South Africa at the Mandela National Stadium in Kampala and Algeria’s goalless stalemate against Niger in Nairobi ensured both teams progressed, with Uganda finishing as group winners for the first time in their CHAN history. Here is a wrap of all the action in Group C.

Uganda’s Historic Night

In front of 34,194 passionate fans, Uganda needed just a draw to clinch their quarter-final place. The Cranes initially took control when Jude Ssemugabi scored in the 31st minute, capitalizing on a counter-attack from Patrick Kakande’s assist. Leading 1-0 at halftime, Uganda appeared to be on track for victory.

However, South Africa roared back in the second half, with Ramahlwe Mphahlele equalizing in the 52nd minute after a VAR review. Just minutes later, Thabiso Kutumela and Ndabayithethwa Ndlondlo added to South Africa’s tally, putting them ahead 3-1.

With time running out, Uganda refused to give up. Ivan Ahimbisibwe won a penalty, which Allan Okello converted to make it 3-2. In a dramatic finish, Uganda earned a second penalty deep into stoppage time, with Rogers Torach scoring in the 96th minute to secure a historic draw.

Meanwhile, Algeria faced a challenging encounter against Niger, where a single point was enough to advance. Despite dominating possession, the defending runners-up struggled to break through a resolute Nigerien defense.

Algeria created several opportunities but could not find the back of the net, with Soufiane Bayazid and Mehdi Merghem both coming close. Niger fought hard, even facing a late red card, but ultimately, Algeria held on for the crucial draw.

Group C Standings

The results left Uganda at the top of Group C with seven points, while Algeria finished second with six points, edging out South Africa on goal difference. Guinea and Niger exited the tournament with four and two points, respectively, with Niger failing to score throughout the group stage.

As Uganda celebrates their landmark achievement, Algeria moves forward with renewed determination to improve their attacking play in the knockout rounds. South Africa, despite their spirited effort, reflects on missed opportunities that cost them dearly.
