President Mahama to Launch Education Fund for Children of August 6 Helicopter Crash Victims
President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to establish an education fund to support the children of victims of the August 6 military helicopter crash in the Ashanti Region.
Speaking on Tuesday, August 12, during the third-day funeral rites (Adua) of Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator, Alhaji Muniru Limuna Mohammed, the President said the fund will be formally launched at the state funeral on Friday, August 15.
“There will be a state funeral on Friday, 15th August. At the funeral, we will announce some programmes for creating a fund that will assist with the education of the children. Friday, I will announce the details of that, so that people who want to contribute to the future of the children they have left behind will have the opportunity to do so,” President Mahama said.
“I believe that Allah will have mercy on him, forgive him for all his sins, and accept him,” he added.
The initiative follows the helicopter crash in the Adansi Akrofuom District that claimed eight lives, including Defence Minister Dr Edward Omane Boamah; Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation Dr Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed; Alhaji Muniru Mohammed; former parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye; and NDC Vice Chairman Samuel Sarpong.
Also killed were Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.
On Sunday, August 10, Ghanaians gathered to pay their respects to Dr Murtala Muhammed and Alhaji Muniru Mohammed. The state funeral, to be held at the Black Star Square, will honour all the victims and serve as the official platform for unveiling the education fund.
