Amanda Anisimova Defeats Iga Swiatek to Reach Semis at WTA Finals
Amanda Anisimova delivered a stunning performance at the WTA Finals, overcoming a set deficit to defeat Iga Swiatek 6-7(3), 6-4, 6-2 in a high-stakes match that secured her a spot in the semifinals. The match, held at the King Saud University Indoor Arena, showcased Anisimova’s resilience and determination, marking a significant victory in her debut at this prestigious year-end championship.
In a contest that lasted two hours and 36 minutes, Anisimova’s victory not only avenged her earlier loss to Swiatek in a historic 6-0, 6-0 Wimbledon final but also demonstrated her growth as a player. This win was her second consecutive triumph over the Polish star, having previously beaten her in the U.S. Open quarter-finals.
Facing Swiatek, the defending champion, Anisimova started slowly, dropping the first set in a tiebreak. However, she showed remarkable composure in the second set, saving three break points in a crucial service game before breaking Swiatek at the end. With renewed confidence, Anisimova dominated the third set, sealing her victory and finishing as the second seed in the Serena Williams Group behind Elena Rybakina.
“I think I just enjoyed it throughout and really embraced the challenge,” Anisimova reflected after the match. “Fewer unforced errors and higher-percentage serving were key in turning things around.”
Anisimova’s remarkable comeback has made her one of only four players in the last five years to reach the semifinals at the WTA Finals after losing their opening match. She will now face the winner of the Stefanie Graf Group, which includes top contenders Aryna Sabalenka, Coco Gauff, and Jessica Pegula.
“I feel like with each match that I’ve played here, my confidence has increased,” Anisimova noted. “I’m getting used to the conditions on the court and figuring out how to use it to my advantage.”
As she gears up for the semifinals, Anisimova expressed excitement about the potential matchups ahead. “Anyone I’m gonna play is gonna be a tough match-up for me. It would be awesome to play an American or to play the number one Aryna. Either way, it’s going to be exciting.”
