GPL Matchweek 25 Wrap: RTU beat Kotoko; Eleven Wonders leave it late against Bechem

Real Tamale United scored in either half as they beat Asante Kotoko 2-1 at the Aliu Mahama Stadium in Tamale on Sunday.

Ronald Pimpong gave RTU the lead from the spot on the 26th minute. In the closing part of the game, Victor Aidoo gave the home side cushion as he calmly headed home a cross from the right wing in the 85th minute.

Etouga pulled one back for the Porcupines, equalling Eric Bekoe’s tally of 17 goals, the most by an Asante Kotoko player in a single league season, and now has the chance to lead the chart when they face Legon Cities next week.

Samuel Inkoom scored an astonishing free kick as Hearts of Oak drew 1-1 with Elmina Sharks at the Accra Sports Satium.

The former U-20 World Cup winner who was handed his first start after two games scored a curling freekick as early as the first minute to put the Phobaians in front.

Hearts continued to dominate the game but Sharks showed resilience as they finally got the equalizer through Michael Asamoah, blasting home a textbook team build up play to ensure they returned to Elmina with a point despite being bottom of the table.

Legon Cities were a delight to watch in their game against Medeama SC, winning 3-1 to keep up momentum for a place in the first half of the league table.

Goals from Abdul Rahman and Hans Kwofie meant the Royals returned to winning ways  after losing narrowly to Berekum Chelsea on Matchday 24.

Vincent Atingah pulled one back for the Tarkwa based club through the spot kick but the damaged had already been caused as Legon Cities held on to their lead to move up to ninth on the league table.

In what was a cracker of a game, Bechem United gave away their two goal lead with ten minutes to go as Techiman Eleven Wonders put a spirited performance to come behind from to win the game.

Augustine Okrah had scored his eleventh goal of the league season in the 31st minute, putting Bechem in front before Emmanuel Owusu made it two on the half hour mark.

Eleven Wonders showed extreme resilience as they pulled one back through Ibrahim Laar’s penalty goal. Just when many thought the game will be ending 2-1 in favor of Bechem, Moro Sumaila levelled things up four minutes into stoppage.

Ibrahim Laar put the dagger through the hearts of the home fans as he scored three minutes later, giving his side the maximum points as Eleven Wonders now sit a place above the relegation zone going into Matchday 26.

Bibiani Gold Stars recorded their sixth consecutive home win in the GPL after coming from behind to beat Great Olympics 2-1 at the Dun’s Park.

Maxwell Abbey Quaye’s 22nd minute opener was cancelled out by Adraman before Prince Opoku Agyemang scored in the 57th minute to hand the miners all three points and an assurance of a second stint in the top flight.

In a five goal thriller at the Sogakope Park in the Volta Region, WAFA edged Berekum Chelsea 3-2 to restore their chances of avoiding relegation this season after going five games without a win.

Michael Zuo netted his first goal for his club in less than a minute into the game to give them the lead with Sampson Agyapong adding up the second from the penalty spot to provide the cushion they needed.

After recess, Berekum Chelsea responded strongly and were awarded with a penalty with Henry Kofi Ansu steeping to convert in the 47th minute. WAFA scored four minutes later, to maintain their two goal lead through Ofori Agyeman.

With eight minutes to go, Ansu got his brace but the boys from Sogakope kept their composure to get the win they needed so badly despite still being in the relegation zone.

King Faisal lost once again to newcomers Accra Lions in Kumasi as speedster Frederick Asante headed in a cross in the 15th minute to hand the Lions the win.

Aduana FC were hoping to end their poor run of games since beating Hearts of Oak on Matchday 20 but it yielded no results as they drew goalless with Ashanti Gold at the Nana Agyeman Badu Park in Dormaa.

Unar Bashiru scored the only goal of the game as Karela United picked a slim win over Dreams FC at the Crosby Awuah Memorial Park in Tarkwa.

After the round of matches, Asante Kotoko still maintain their eight point over Bechem United, with Aduana Stars and Great Olympics making up the top four.

Despite beating Asante Kotoko, Real Tamale United alongside WAFA and Elmina Skarks remain bottom of the table with nine games to go.
