DStv to Launch Dedicated SuperSport Channel for AFCON 2025
DStv will launch a dedicated SuperSport channel for the 2025 CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in December, ahead of the tournament’s kick-off in Morocco on December 21.
The announcement was made at SuperSport’s Studio 6 on Thursday, November 6, by Canal+ Africa CEO David Mignot and CAF President Patrice Motsepe, marking a major milestone in African sports broadcasting.
The new channel will offer multilingual coverage of the tournament in English, French, Portuguese, and several indigenous African languages, reflecting a drive toward inclusivity and expanded access for audiences across the continent.
Merger Unlocks Broadcasting Synergies
Mr. Mignot said the launch of the AFCON 2025 channel underscores the success of the merger between Canal+ and MultiChoice, which aims to deliver “unprecedented coverage” and elevate the viewing experience for African audiences.
“Our newly forged merger with MultiChoice has already unlocked opportunities and benefits for our customers. The Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025 is a great demonstration of the power and potential of this common ambition—bringing together our expertise to offer exceptional coverage to millions of African fans,” he stated.
He added that broadcasting the tournament in multiple languages underscores Canal+’s mission to strengthen its connection with African viewers.
Canal+ Finalises MultiChoice Takeover
French media group Groupe Canal+ completed its takeover of MultiChoice on September 22, 2025, after meeting all regulatory and shareholder conditions.
Canal+ initially acquired a 6.5 per cent stake in MultiChoice in October 2020 and gradually increased its shareholding, eventually making a final offer valued at $6.5 billion (approximately $6.7 per share), which valued MultiChoice at around $2.9 billion.
Mr. Mignot noted that the merger will not only enhance sports broadcasting but also enrich DStv’s entertainment catalogue.
“Over a 10- to 15-year period, we will build a catalogue of 100,000 to 150,000 hours, which can then travel across borders through dubbing and rescripting,” he said.
Expanded African Content and Sports Access
Under the partnership, Canal+—which currently produces 4,000 hours of African content annually in up to 15 languages—will combine with MultiChoice’s 6,000 hours of programming to produce about 10,000 hours of African content each year in as many as 35 languages.
As part of the ongoing collaboration, DStv has also begun airing selected French Ligue 1 McDonald’s matches live on SuperSport, giving subscribers access to top-tier French football featuring players such as Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembélé and Désiré Doué.
“SuperSport will broadcast up to three Ligue 1 McDonald’s matches per weekend to DStv, DStv Stream, and GOtv subscribers across the continent,” the network confirmed.
The launch of the AFCON 2025 channel reinforces the merged entity’s commitment to enhancing Africa’s sports broadcasting landscape and deepening audience engagement across multiple markets.
