President Akufo-Addo has authorized the deployment of two hundred (200) military officers to the Central and Western Regions to put a stop to small-scale illegal mining – galamsey – within water bodies in the two regions.
The deployment of the military personnel was disclosed in a statement by the Ministry of Information.
According to statement, the military officers are to ensure the removal of all persons and logistics involved in the illegal mining activity from the water bodies in the regions.
The decision by the president, as noted by the Minister for Information in the release, is in respect to resolutions contained in the final communique of the Stakeholder
Dialogue on Small Scale Mining on April 14 and 15, 2021.
