2022 World Cup: Eight African referees selected by FIFA to officiate games
The International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) has published the first list of referees selected to officiate matches for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar later this year.
The list which was released on Tuesday, April 5, 2022, has eight top African officials who will be taking center stage in games during the Mundial.
With the finals of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 fast approaching and with less than 7 months from the start of the competition, the FIFA Referees Committee has called on eight referees from the African continent.

Mustapha Ghorbal from Algeria, Redouane Jiyed from Morocco, Bakary Gassama of the Gambia, Bamlak Tessema from Ethiopia, Victor Gomez of South Africa, Janny Sikazwe from Zambia, Maguette Ndiaye from Senegal and Jean -Jacques Ndala the DR Congo were the eight top referees who made the cut from Africa.
Interestingly, Bakary Gassama of the Gambia will be making history as he becomes the first African referee to officiate in three World Cup finals spanning from the 2014 edition in Brazil, the 2018 edition in Russia and now Qatar 2022.
The 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar will be held from November 21 to December 18.
