2023 AFCON isn’t the most important thing for Black Stars at this moment – Chris Hughton

2023 AFCON isn’t the most important thing for Black Stars at this moment – Chris Hughton

Black Stars head coach, Chris Hughton, has pointed to the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification games against Madagascar and Comoros as the most important things to worry about and not next year’s AFCON.

He said this in an interview with the BBC as Ghana’s National Men’s Football Team prepares to play against Madagascar on Friday, November 17 at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi before playing Comoros on November 21.

However, the four time African champions get the chance to win a fifth continental gold piece in Cote D’Ivoire next year at the 2023 AFCON where Ghana has been drawn in Group B with Egypt, Mozambique and Cape Verde.

For the under fire coach of the Black Stars, the immediate challenge happening this month is of major priority than the task in January next year.

“It’s wonderful and great to want to talk about the AFCON but sometimes for coaches it is difficult because we have two very important World Cup qualification games before then.”

“If your concentrations are too far past that then you can take your eye off what is at this moment, the most important thing. The most important thing for us at this moment are two World Cup qualification games.”
