2023 Africa Games: Former President Mahama calls for cancellation of competition
Former President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, has called on government to abort the hosting the 2023 Africa Games which is expected to take off in August 2023 in Ghana.
According to him, it is not advisable to provide resources to host the multi-sport event with the current economic conditions the country is facing.
Organisers of the competition are already in a race against time to complete the necessary infrastructure for the games before the deadline, but have continuously assured the various projects including the Borteyman sports complex will be completed on time.
“If it’s not too late, we can pull out of hosting the Africa Games, as it will severely stretch our precarious finances by hundreds of millions of cedis,” Mahama said during his address on the economic state of the country at the UPSA Auditorium on Thursday.
About $140 million has been earmarked for facilities for the games which is expected to host 54 countries who will be competing in 25 sporting disciplines.
