  • 2026 FIFA world Cup Diaries: Germany Lead Group E Spotlight as Curaçao Chase History

Group E of the 2026 FIFA World Cup promises a fascinating mix of global pedigree, emerging challengers and historic firsts as Germany, Curaçao, Ecuador and Ivory Coast battle for places in the knockout stage of football’s biggest tournament.

The expanded 48-team competition will run from June 11 to July 19 across the United States, Mexico and Canada, with the top two teams in each group and the eight best third-placed sides advancing to the Round of 32.

Germany
Germany arrive as the clear favourites to top Group E and are once again expected to challenge for the World Cup title under head coach Julian Nagelsmann.

Currently ranked 10th in the FIFA world rankings, the four-time world champions qualified by winning UEFA qualifying Group A and will be making their 21st World Cup appearance. Die Mannschaft have featured in every tournament since 1954 and remain tied for the second-most World Cup titles with four triumphs in 1954, 1974, 1990 and 2014.

Much of Germany’s hopes will rest on the creativity and attacking quality of a talented core led by Florian Wirtz, Joshua Kimmich and Jamal Musiala.

Wirtz heads into the tournament after completing his first season with Liverpool, where the 23-year-old continued his rise as one of Europe’s most dangerous attacking players. He has already scored 11 goals in 40 appearances for Germany.
Kimmich, now a 10-time Bundesliga champion with Bayern Munich, will captain the side, while Musiala’s pace and creativity in midfield are expected to be central to Germany’s ambitions of making another deep run.

Curaçao
Curaçao are preparing for a landmark moment in their football history as they get set for their first-ever World Cup appearance.

Ranked 82nd in the world, the Caribbean nation qualified as winners of Concacaf qualifying Group B under veteran Dutch coach Dick Advocaat.
With a population of just 158,000, Curaçao will become the smallest nation ever to compete at a FIFA World Cup.

The squad is captained by experienced midfielder Leandro Bacuna, who previously starred for Aston Villa before moving to Türkiye. Bacuna and his brother Juninho were among the pioneers of a new generation of Curaçao internationals.
Veteran goalkeeper Eloy Room also brings major experience, having earned 71 caps and previously starring for Columbus Crew in Major League Soccer.
Another key figure is midfielder Tahith Chong, a former Manchester United prospect now playing for Sheffield United. Chong is notably the only member of the squad born on the island itself.

As the lowest-ranked side in Group E, expectations are modest, but any points earned during their debut campaign would represent a historic achievement.

Ivory Coast
Ivory Coast return to the World Cup for the first time since 2014 hoping to finally break through to the knockout rounds.

The Elephants qualified by winning CAF qualifying Group F and enter the tournament ranked 34th in the world under coach Emerse Faé.

This will be Ivory Coast’s fourth World Cup appearance, though they have never progressed beyond the group stage.

Their squad blends experience and power, led by midfielder Franck Kessié, winger Nicolas Pépé and midfielder Ibrahim Sangaré.

Kessié, currently with Al Ahli is Ivory Coast’s active leader in both appearances and goals with 100 caps and 14 international goals. The former AC Milan and FC Barcelona midfielder remains the heartbeat of the side.

Pépé enjoyed a productive campaign with Villarreal, contributing eight goals and 10 assists, while Sangaré played a major role in helping Nottingham Forest avoid relegation from the Premier League.

Ivory Coast are expected to battle Ecuador for one of the automatic qualification spots, although advancing as one of the best third-placed teams also remains a realistic route to the knockout stages.

Ecuador
Ecuador head into the tournament confident of causing problems for every team in the group thanks to one of the strongest defensive units in international football.

La Tri qualified after finishing second in Conmebol qualifying and are currently ranked 23rd in the FIFA standings under head coach Sebastián Beccacece.

This will be Ecuador’s fifth World Cup appearance. Their best performance came in 2006 when they reached the Round of 16, the only time they have progressed beyond the group phase.

The South Americans are led by veteran striker Enner Valencia, midfield star Moisés Caicedo and rising talent Pedro Vite.

Valencia, now playing for Tuzos in Mexico, has scored 49 goals in 105 appearances for his country and remains Ecuador’s biggest attacking threat.

Caicedo has developed into one of Ecuador’s most recognisable exports after establishing himself as a dominant box-to-box midfielder for Chelsea, while former Whitecaps midfielder Vite is preparing for his first World Cup appearance.
