  • 2026 FIFA World Cup Diaries: Spain and Uruguay Set for Group H Showdown

Group H of the 2026 FIFA World Cup is shaping up to be one of the tournament’s most competitive pools, featuring European giants Spain, South American powerhouse Uruguay, ambitious Saudi Arabia and tournament debutants Cape Verde.

With Spain entering the tournament as one of the favourites for the title and Uruguay beginning a new era under Marcelo Bielsa, Group H promises high-quality football, emerging stars and intriguing storylines across all four nations.

The top two teams from the group will qualify automatically for the Round of 32 in the expanded 48-team FIFA World Cup.

Spain arrive at the World Cup carrying enormous expectations as they chase a second FIFA World Cup crown, 16 years after their historic triumph in South Africa in 2010.

La Roja endured disappointment at the 2022 tournament after crashing out in the Round of 16, but this generation is viewed as one capable of restoring Spain to the summit of world football.

Much of the spotlight will fall on teenage sensation Lamine Yamal, who is set for his World Cup debut. The Barcelona winger already etched his name into football history after helping Spain win the UEFA Euro 2024 title just a day after turning 17.

Despite recovering from a hamstring injury ahead of the tournament, Spain remain hopeful he will be fit for their opening fixture.

The Spanish midfield is equally loaded with quality. Pedri is preparing for his second World Cup appearance, while Ballon d’Or winner Rodri will once again anchor the midfield with his composure and tactical intelligence.

Spain possess one of the deepest squads in the competition and are widely tipped to finish top of Group H.

Cape Verde will make history in 2026 by appearing at their first-ever FIFA World Cup.

The Blue Sharks have steadily grown into one of Africa’s rising football nations and qualified after an impressive campaign in which they remained unbeaten at home.

Head coach Pedro Leitao Brito, popularly known as Bubista, has played a central role in the nation’s football development. A former player who helped elevate Cape Verde internationally, Bubista also enjoyed spells in Spain and Portugal during his playing career.

Cape Verde’s football story is closely tied to the nation’s relatively young history. The country gained independence in 1975 and formed its national football team just three years later.

Veteran forward Ryan Mendes enters the tournament as the country’s all-time leading scorer with 22 international goals and is expected to provide leadership alongside emerging talents such as Dailon Livramento and experienced goalkeeper Vozinha.

Although they are viewed as outsiders in the group, Cape Verde will be determined to prove they can compete on football’s biggest stage.

Saudi Arabia head into the 2026 World Cup hoping to recreate the magic of their famous 2022 campaign, when they stunned eventual champions Argentina in one of the greatest upsets in tournament history.

The Green Falcons return to the United States, where they first appeared at a World Cup back in 1994. Since then, Saudi Arabia have become regular participants on football’s grandest stage, missing only the 2010 edition.

New manager Georgios Donis took charge in April after several successful years coaching in the Saudi Pro League and will aim to guide the team back into the knockout rounds.

Captain Salem Al Dawsari remains the face of the squad after his memorable performances in Qatar four years ago. He will be supported by defender Saud Abdulhamid, Ali Majrashi, Ziyad Al Johani and striker Firas Al Buraikan.

The growth of the Saudi Pro League, boosted by the arrival of global stars in recent years, has also raised the profile and competitiveness of Saudi Arabian football.

Uruguay enter the tournament beginning a fresh chapter following the retirements of legendary forwards Luis Suárez and Edinson Cavani.

Now the face of La Celeste, Federico Valverde carries the responsibility of leading one of South America’s most historic football nations. The Real Madrid midfielder captained his club during the season and produced eight assists as Madrid finished second in La Liga behind Barcelona.

Uruguay will once again be managed by the highly respected Marcelo Bielsa, who is coaching at his third World Cup with a third different national team.

The South Americans boast a proud football tradition, having won the FIFA World Cup in 1930 and 1950. Although they suffered a disappointing group-stage exit in 2022, Uruguay have consistently remained among the world’s strongest tournament teams, qualifying for every World Cup since 2010.

Alongside Valverde, experienced midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur, defender José María Giménez and veteran goalkeeper Fernando Muslera will be key figures in their campaign.

Uruguay are widely expected to battle Spain for top spot in Group H.
