2026 FIFA World Cup: Egypt Reach Last 16 After Penalty Shootout Win Over Australia

Egypt reached the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 for the first time in their history after defeating Australia 4-2 on penalties following a gripping 1-1 draw after extra time in Dallas on Friday.

The Pharaohs held their nerve from the spot to cap another memorable chapter in what has already become their greatest-ever World Cup campaign. Defender Hossam Abdelmaguid converted the decisive penalty, sparking wild celebrations among the Egyptian players and thousands of jubilant supporters inside the 70,000-capacity stadium.

The victory keeps Egypt’s dream alive and sets up a mouthwatering last-16 clash with defending champions Argentina, provided Lionel Messi’s side overcome tournament debutants Cape Verde.

Neither Egypt nor Australia had ever won a men’s World Cup knockout match, ensuring history would be made regardless of the outcome.

After 120 minutes failed to separate the two sides, the contest was settled by a dramatic penalty shootout in which Egypt showed greater composure.

Australia coach Tony Popovic made a bold late gamble by introducing experienced goalkeeper Mathew Ryan moments before the shootout, hoping the veteran could inspire the Socceroos.

Instead, the move failed to pay off.

Towering defender Harry Souttar blasted Australia’s opening penalty over the crossbar to hand Egypt an immediate advantage. Mohamed Salah calmly converted his penalty before 18-year-old Lucas Herrington struck the crossbar with Australia’s fourth kick.

Abdelmaguid then stepped forward and confidently buried the winning penalty to seal a famous victory, leaving Salah in tears of joy while devastated Australian players collapsed onto the turf.

Egypt made a bright start despite concerns over the fitness of captain Salah, who returned after recovering from a hamstring injury.

The breakthrough came in the 13th minute when midfielder Emam Ashour rose unmarked at the far post to head home a precise cross from Karim Hafez for his second goal of the tournament.

The early strike forced Australia to chase the game, although the Socceroos struggled to create clear opportunities despite enjoying more possession.

Australia had gone close inside the opening five minutes when Cristian Volpato rattled the crossbar, but Egypt gradually settled into the contest and looked increasingly comfortable.

Salah, closely watched throughout the match, remained largely on the fringes of the game as Australia’s defence limited his influence.

The Socceroos emerged with greater urgency after halftime and were handed a lifeline ten minutes into the second period.

An inswinging free-kick created confusion inside Egypt’s penalty area, and defender Mohamed Hany, under pressure from Australian attackers, inadvertently headed the ball into his own net to level the score at 1-1.

It was Hany’s second own goal of the tournament and gave Australia renewed belief.

Egypt nearly restored their lead moments earlier when Manchester City forward Omar Marmoush missed a glorious chance from close range, sliding his effort wide with only the goalkeeper to beat.

As the match wore on, both teams recognised the significance of the occasion, becoming increasingly cautious while searching for the decisive goal.

Egypt looked the stronger team during extra time, creating the better openings while Australia relied heavily on disciplined defending and goalkeeper Patrick Beach.

Salah had an opportunity to settle the contest but fired over the crossbar with his weaker right foot, while Beach produced an excellent save late in normal time to deny Egypt and force an additional 30 minutes.

Neither side could find a breakthrough, leaving penalties to decide the winner.

In the shootout, Egypt displayed remarkable composure.

Salah confidently converted his spot-kick, while Australia’s costly misses proved decisive as the Pharaohs completed a famous victory.

For Egypt, the triumph represents another milestone in a tournament that has already rewritten the nation’s football history.

After claiming their first-ever World Cup victory during the group stage against New Zealand, they have now gone a step further by winning their maiden knockout match to reach the last 16 for the first time.
