  • 2026 FIFA World Cup: Groups G, H and I Ready for Action as Knockout Race Reaches Fever Pitch

The race for the FIFA World Cup 2026 knockout stage reaches a dramatic climax on Friday as the final matches in Groups G, H and I take centre stage across the United States, Canada and Mexico.

While a handful of teams have already secured their places in the Round of 32, the fate of ten nations remains uncertain, setting the stage for a day packed with tension, high-stakes encounters and potentially decisive moments in the battle for World Cup survival.

One of the most anticipated fixtures of the day takes place in Boston, where France and Norway meet in a clash that will determine the winners of Group I.

Both teams have already booked their tickets to the knockout rounds, but finishing first could provide a more favourable route through the tournament. The encounter also promises a fascinating duel between two of world football’s biggest stars.

France captain Kylian Mbappe and Norway striker Erling Haaland have each scored four goals so far and are among the leading contenders for the Golden Boot. Their individual battle could prove decisive as two of Europe’s strongest sides seek to carry momentum into the knockout phase.

France have looked impressive throughout the group stage, combining attacking flair with defensive solidity, while Norway have continued to demonstrate that they are no longer underdogs on the global stage.

Elsewhere in Group I, Senegal and Iraq enter their final match knowing that only victory is likely to keep their World Cup dreams alive.

Both nations are yet to pick up a point and have already missed out on automatic qualification. However, a third-place finish could still offer a route into the Round of 32 depending on results elsewhere.

For Senegal, one of Africa’s leading representatives, it is a final opportunity to rescue a disappointing campaign. Iraq, meanwhile, are seeking to keep alive their hopes of reaching the knockout stage for the first time.

With elimination staring both teams in the face, Toronto is expected to witness an intense battle where caution may quickly give way to desperation.

Group H also promises fireworks as former world champions Spain and Uruguay collide in Guadalajara.

Spain sit atop the standings after collecting four points from their opening two matches and know that victory will guarantee first place. Even a draw could be enough, depending on the outcome of the group’s other fixture.

Led by teenage sensation Lamine Yamal and an exciting generation of talent, La Roja have impressed with their attacking football and enter the contest as slight favourites.

Uruguay, however, remain firmly in the qualification race. The South Americans have accumulated two points from their first two matches and can leapfrog Spain into first place with a victory.

Given the quality and pedigree of both nations, the encounter is expected to be one of the standout matches of the final round of group-stage action.

Tournament debutants Cabo Verde continue to be one of the surprise packages of the World Cup and could complete a remarkable journey by reaching the knockout rounds.

The African newcomers face Saudi Arabia in Houston knowing that victory would guarantee their place in the Round of 32. A draw could also prove enough depending on results elsewhere.

Cabo Verde have already exceeded expectations during their first appearance on football’s biggest stage and now stand on the brink of making national history.

Saudi Arabia also have everything to play for. The Asian side will qualify if they secure victory and Uruguay fail to defeat Spain, ensuring that every moment of the two Group H matches will carry enormous significance.

Perhaps the most unpredictable group heading into the final round is Group G, where all four teams still have a chance of progressing.

Egypt currently lead the standings following their historic comeback victory over New Zealand, a result that delivered the Pharaohs’ first-ever World Cup win.

The North Africans face Iran in Seattle knowing that another victory would secure top spot. A draw could also be enough if Belgium do not record a heavy win over New Zealand.

Iran remain firmly in contention and could finish first if they defeat Egypt while Belgium fail to win. Such a scenario would cap an impressive campaign for the Asian side.

Belgium, meanwhile, are desperate to avoid another early exit after their disappointing group-stage elimination at the 2022 World Cup. The Red Devils still have a path to the summit of the group but may require both victory and a sizeable goal difference swing to get there.

New Zealand are also dreaming of a historic breakthrough. The All Whites have never reached the World Cup knockout rounds and can finally achieve that feat if they defeat Belgium and other results go their way.

With qualification, elimination and group leadership all still undecided, Group G promises a dramatic finish that could produce some of the tournament’s most memorable moments.

By the end of Friday’s action, the identities of six more teams advancing to the Round of 32 will be confirmed, while several nations will see their World Cup dreams come to an end.
