  • 2026 FIFA World Cup Smashes Broadcast Records as Over 54 Million Tune In Across Host Nations

The FIFA World Cup 2026 has made a remarkable start both on and off the field, with record-breaking television audiences across North America underlining the tournament’s growing global appeal.

More than 54 million viewers across the United States, Mexico and Canada watched their respective nations’ opening matches, making the first-ever World Cup hosted by three countries an immediate broadcasting success.

The biggest milestone came in the United States, where the host nation’s opening 3-0 victory over Paraguay attracted a combined average audience of 27.5 million viewers across FOX and Telemundo. The figure makes it the most-watched football match ever broadcast in the United States.

The match also set several additional records. FOX registered the largest audience for a FIFA Men’s World Cup match in English-language television history in the United States, while Telemundo recorded the most-watched U.S. Men’s National Team World Cup match ever on Spanish-language television. The broadcaster also achieved a record audience for a World Cup group-stage game not involving Mexico.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino hailed the figures as evidence of football’s power to unite people across cultures and borders.

“What we are witnessing here is truly historic,” Infantino said. “The United States’ opening match against Paraguay was the most-watched FIFA World Cup match ever broadcast in the country, while more than 54 million people across Canada, Mexico and the United States watched their respective nations’ opening matches, shattering records and showing how football is truly uniting the world.”

He added that the tournament’s significance extends beyond television numbers.

“These figures tell you everything about what this tournament means to these countries, this continent and the entire world. However, this is not just about numbers – this is about millions of people from every corner of the world coming together through football.”

Mexico also enjoyed unprecedented viewing figures during its opening victory over South Africa. The match attracted an average audience of 23.4 million viewers, making it the country’s most-watched FIFA World Cup match of the 21st century.

An astonishing 72.1 percent television market share was recorded during the game, meaning nearly three out of every four people watching television in Mexico were tuned in to support El Tri. The fixture also proved hugely popular in the United States, where approximately 20 million viewers watched the match, helping Telemundo set another record for the most-watched Spanish-language World Cup opening match in U.S. television history.

In Canada, enthusiasm for the tournament was equally evident. The hosts’ opening match against Bosnia and Herzegovina attracted an average audience of 3.1 million viewers across English and French-language broadcasters, making it the third most-watched FIFA World Cup match involving Canada’s men’s national team this century.

The impressive television numbers come alongside strong attendance figures inside stadiums, where more than one million fans have already watched matches live during the early stages of the competition.

With packed stadiums, passionate supporters and record audiences across multiple platforms, FIFA World Cup 2026 is already proving to be one of the most widely followed tournaments in football history, reinforcing the sport’s status as the world’s most popular game and showcasing the excitement generated by the first World Cup jointly hosted by three nations.
