2026 FIFA World Cup Wonderkids: Argentina’s Nico Paz
As anticipation builds for the FIFA World Cup 2026, one young name is rapidly emerging as a player capable of lighting up football’s biggest stage—Nico Paz.
The 21-year-old attacking midfielder has enjoyed a sensational campaign with Como 1907 and is now widely regarded as one of the brightest young talents set to feature for Argentina national football team at the global tournament next year.
Paz, born on September 8, 2004, made his senior international debut for Argentina against Bolivia national football team in October 2024. Since then, his rapid development has caught the attention of some of football’s biggest names.
The creative left-footed midfielder has become a central figure in Como’s ambitious project under coach Cesc Fabregas. Playing in Serie A, Paz has produced an impressive return of 12 goals and seven assists during the 2025/26 campaign, establishing himself as one of the league’s standout young stars.
Known for his creativity, composure and ability to glide past defenders, Paz has drawn comparisons with several of Argentina’s recent World Cup heroes. Head coach Lionel Scaloni is believed to see him as part of the next evolution of the national side, much like Julian Alvarez, Alexis Mac Allister and Enzo Fernandez did during Argentina’s triumphant run at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Paz’s ability to operate between the lines, carry the ball forward and create chances has added a fresh dimension to Argentina’s attacking play. His performances have also earned praise from some of the sport’s biggest figures.
Argentina captain Lionel Messi described Paz as a player with “bags of quality” and praised his intelligence and maturity on the pitch.
Scaloni also spoke highly of the youngster, suggesting that if Real Madrid choose to activate their reported buy-back option, the midfielder has the talent to succeed at the highest level.
Fabregas, meanwhile, called Paz “a special player” and warned against restricting his natural creativity, insisting the midfielder has the mentality and talent to become one of the world’s best players.
Former Argentina winger Angel Di Maria echoed those sentiments, saying Paz’s development at Como has given him confidence and consistency, while Francesco Totti admitted he is fascinated by the Argentine’s potential.
Argentina’s World Cup campaign begins on June 16 against Algeria national football team at Kansas City Stadium before further group matches against Austria national football team and Jordan national football team in Dallas.
If his current trajectory continues, Nico Paz could become one of the breakout stars of the 2026 World Cup and the latest gem in Argentina’s rich footballing generation.
