In what is rather a surprise finding, a survey by Pan-African and nonpartisan survey research network, Afrobarometer, has observed that, a higher proportion of the Ghanaian populace, are willing and even in support of paying higher taxes imposed by government.
According to Afrobarometer, 72 percent of Ghanaians are willing to pay taxes to finance the country’s development rather than rely on aids, grants and loans to finance development.
The willingness of Ghanaians to pay more taxes is however, premised on the fact that government does a good job of delivering basic services, addressing educational needs, providing water and sanitation services, maintaining roads and bridges, and providing a reliable supply of electricity.
The survey also revealed that, despite wanting to pay more taxes, most Ghanaians do not know what taxes they are required to pay.
On whether government has the right to collect taxes or not, 79 percent of Ghanaians surveyed answered in affirmative with 15 percent of those surveyed asserting government does not have the right to take taxes.
