The Registrar-General’s Department (RGD) has issued a new directive to businesses over rising cases of extortion at its premises.

Per the new directive, payments worth Ghs 5,000 or more to the Department by businesses will have to be done through a banker’s draft.

The move according to the Registrar-General, Mrs Jemima Oware, follows rising cases of extortion at the premises of the RGD.

“Sometimes charlatans take the monies and it doesn’t end in government’s coffers, so if you have any transaction with the Department above Ghs 5,000 then it must be paid through banker’s draft because we are not going to accept cash,” she told the media.

“Because with banker’s draft you are assured that the money is not going to end in somebody’s pocket,” she added.

Mrs Oware further noted the RGD will not hesitate to strike out names of businesses if payments through middle-men do not hit the Department’s accounts.

The new directive according to the Registrar-General kickstarts January 18, 2021.

A banker’s draft, also known as a banker’s cheque, is like asking a bank to write a cheque for you. You give them your money and they give you a cheque for that amount to give to the person you’re paying. For this reason, they do not bounce because of a lack of funds.
