1kg of imported rice costs 36.9% more than locally perfumed rice – MoFA
Data made available to norvanreports by the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, indicates that imported perfumed rice costs 36.9% more than locally perfumed rice.
According to the Statistics, Research and Information Directorate of the Ministry, the average price of locally perfumed rice on the market as at January 8, 2022, was GHS 4.98 pesewas per 1kg with the minimum and maximum prices being GHS 2.79 pesewas and GHS 7 respectively.
For imported perfumed rice, the average price per 1kg stands at GHS 7.90 pesewas with the minimum and maximum prices being GHS 5.27 pesewas and GHS 11.52 pesewas.
Of the major markets surveyed by the Ministry, the Tema Metropolis had the highest price for local perfumed rice being GHs 7 with Tamale having the lowest price for local perfumed rice being GHS 2.79 pesewas.
With regards to imported perfumed rice, Sunyani had the highest price being GHS 11.52 pesewas followed by Tema with GHS 10 for imported perfumed rice.
Imported perfumed rice sold at Agbogboloshie had the lowest price of GHS 5.27 pesewas.

Other food products such as maize, yam, cassava, gari and millet had average prices of GHS 3.07, GHS 4.37, GHS 1.74, GHS 5.11 and GHS 3.83 respectively.
‘Buy Ghana Rice’ campaign
The ‘Buy Ghana Rice’ campaign is a Citi FM campaign which encouraged consumption of local rice farming for food security and economic gains.
It was approved and supported by the Ministry of Food and Agriculture and the Ministry of Information.
In 2018, rice imports to Ghana was $451 million, rice imports to Ghana increased from 5.8 million in 1969 to $451 million in 2018 growing at an average annual rate of 54.81%.
