AFCON 2021: Nigeria progress with full mark as Egypt joins in the round of 16

Nigeria made it three wins in three matches after beating Guinea-Bissau 2-0 in the third and final round of games in Group D at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations.

The win ends the dream of Guinea Bissau, who are even though are third cannot move forward in the competition after earning just a point in three games.

The Nigerians, who had already guaranteed their presence in the round of 16 after beating Egypt and Sudan made it full mark to become the first team to finish the group stage with 9 points in this year’s competition. .

Without goals and with a game without much intensity, the Super Eagles and the Djurtus played a first half characterized by a lot of physical contact and some stoppages, which made the game lukewarm.

In fact, the biggest pressure was on the Guineans, since only victory was important to guarantee their permanence in the competition, which didn’t apply to Nigeria, who entered this duel with their passage to the next phase already guaranteed.

Goals from Sadiq Umar and William Ekong in the second half made the difference as the Super Eagles sent the Djurtus packing after 90 minutes.

In the group D game, Mohamed Abdelmoneim El Sayed scored the only goal to secure Egypt a 1-0 victory over Sudan to confirm their place in the knockout stages of the tournament.

The Pharaohs broke the deadlock 10 minutes before the break through Abdelmoneim’s close range header from Abdalla Mohamed’s outswing corner.

The Pharaohs were led by talisman and captain Mohamed Salah to take on Sudan who also needed a win to have any chance of progressing but it was the former who got the better of results.

Mohammed Salah was names Man of of the Match for the second game running with his talismanic display for the Pharaohs.
