A tale of a father and his sons; Abedi Pele discloses his sons are fulfilling his World Cup dreams
Legendary Black Stars player Abedi Pele has disclosed that his two sons; Andre Ayew and Jordan Ayew are fulfilling his World Cup dreams and he is optimistic the duo will be instrumental for Ghana at the 2022 FIFA World Cup ongoing in Qatar.
The three times African Footballer of the year capped 73 times for Ghana and was a household name in the African Championships of the 1980s and ’90s with Ghana. He was a member of Ghana’s victorious team in the 1982 African Cup of Nations, but he never had an opportunity to play in the FIFA World Cup, as the Black Stars failed to qualify for the competition during his career.
However, he was arguably the most dominant figure on the African football scene for nearly a decade with his performance in the 1992 African Cup of Nations often cited as one of the most outstanding football displays by any player in a single tournament.
“A dream was to be at the FIFAWorldCup but didn’t get the chance back then! Now make my dream and Ghana as a nation come on. Alhamdulillah,” Abedi Pele said in a post on Twitter.
All of Abedi’s sons are footballers and have represented Ghana on the highest stage with Andre and Rahim – representing Ghana in the FIFA 2010 World Cup in South Africa while Jordan and Andre represented Ghana in the FIFA 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
In the game against Switzerland, Andre Ayew became Ghana’s most-capped player ever, taking him one game clear of Asamoah Gyan who played 109 times for the senior team.
After the match, Andre was honoured for his achievement and was presented with a custom shirt by the President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kurt Okraku, in the company of his teammates and head coach, Otto Addo.
The U-20 World Cup-winning captain made his debut for the Black Stars at the age of 17 in Ghana’s 1-1 draw with Senegal on August 7, 2007 and was a key member in Ghana’s run to the quarterfinals of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa
Andre will lead the team once again as the skipper for the side whiles Jordan Ayew is expected to play a key role for the team in Qatar in terms of attacking options.
Ghana is one of five African countries representing the continent alongside Morocco, Senegal, Tunisia and Cameroon and will open their World Cup campaign against Portugal on Thursday November 24, 2022 at 4pm local time.
