  • Access Bank Ghana Bets on Efficiency, Credit Growth and Digital Push After Record Assets

Access Bank Ghana is entering a new phase of its growth strategy, shifting attention from rapid balance sheet expansion to profitability, efficiency and stronger shareholder returns after recording its strongest asset base to date.

At its 18th Annual General Meeting in Accra, the bank reported total assets of GHS 19.02 billion for the 2025 financial year, representing a 14.90% year-on-year increase.

The growth was supported by stronger deposit mobilisation, an expanded loan book and retained earnings, reinforcing Access Bank Ghana’s position among the country’s major financial institutions.

But management signalled that the next phase of growth will not be measured by size alone.

The bank said its new priority is to convert its enlarged balance sheet, customer base, branch network and digital infrastructure into stronger earnings, improved operational efficiency and sustainable returns for shareholders.

The strategy, branded “Grow, Transform and Protect,” is aimed at deepening customer relationships, expanding quality lending, strengthening digital delivery and protecting the bank’s capital base.

Board Chairperson Ama Sarpong Bawuah said the bank’s 2025 performance reflected resilience and disciplined execution despite a challenging operating environment.

“Access Bank Ghana delivered a resilient performance driven by customer-focused innovation, prudent management and the dedication of our workforce. We remain committed to creating sustainable value for shareholders while supporting Ghana’s economic development,” she said.

Customer deposits rose by 11.50% to GHS 14.54 billion, giving the bank a strong funding base for its operations. The growth in deposits also reflects the strength of the bank’s customer franchise and its ability to attract funds in a competitive banking market.

The loan portfolio expanded more aggressively, rising by 36.70% to GHS 5.06 billion. According to management, lending volumes have effectively tripled since 2022, pointing to the bank’s increased role in supporting households, businesses, SMEs, corporates and public-sector clients.

Total equity climbed to GHS 2.04 billion, supported entirely by retained earnings.

This is significant because retained earnings strengthen capital without immediate recourse to fresh shareholder injections. For a bank seeking to expand lending while protecting asset quality, a stronger capital base is critical.

Managing Director Pearl Nkrumah said the bank’s next strategic focus will be on deploying its existing strengths more efficiently.

“The balance sheet, branch network, deposit franchise and digital infrastructure are already in place. The focus now is to deploy those strengths more effectively to generate sustainable returns and deepen our contribution to Ghana’s economy,” she said.

That statement captures the bank’s strategic pivot.

Access Bank Ghana has built scale. The task now is to extract more value from that scale.

For banks, a large balance sheet is useful only when it produces sustainable earnings without creating excessive credit, liquidity or operational risk. The challenge is therefore to grow income faster than costs, lend without weakening asset quality and use digital channels to improve customer service while reducing transaction costs.

The bank’s transformation agenda will focus heavily on digitalisation and operational efficiency.

This is increasingly important in Ghana’s banking sector, where customer expectations are changing rapidly. Retail customers want faster, simpler and cheaper banking services. SMEs need easier access to working capital, payment solutions and advisory support. Corporate clients require efficient treasury, cash management and trade services.

Banks that can combine digital convenience with strong risk management are likely to gain market share.

Access Bank Ghana appears to be positioning itself for that environment.

Management said the bank will deepen penetration across retail, SME, corporate and public-sector banking, while maintaining discipline around risk, capital and asset quality.

This balance will be important.

The sharp growth in loans suggests the bank is taking advantage of renewed credit demand as Ghana’s macroeconomic environment improves. But rapid lending growth must be carefully managed to avoid future non-performing loan pressures.

The banking industry is emerging from a period marked by macroeconomic instability, inflationary pressure, debt restructuring and tighter financial conditions. As conditions improve, banks have more room to expand credit. But the memory of recent balance sheet stress means risk management remains central.

Access Bank Ghana’s “Protect” pillar therefore carries as much weight as its growth ambition.

A bank that grows too fast without protecting capital and asset quality can quickly lose the benefits of expansion. But a bank that grows prudently can convert balance sheet strength into long-term value.

Shareholders at the AGM approved the bank’s audited 2025 financial statements and endorsed several board and executive appointments aimed at strengthening governance and leadership.

They also welcomed a proposed dividend, subject to approval from the Bank of Ghana, while urging management to accelerate earnings growth amid moderating profit levels.

The dividend expectation is important because shareholders want evidence that the bank’s growth is translating into distributable value.

For listed and unlisted financial institutions alike, capital strength, earnings quality and dividend capacity remain key indicators of investor confidence.

Beyond financial performance, Access Bank Ghana also strengthened its reputation during the year, earning recognition as Ghana’s Best Bank 2025 at the Euromoney Awards and receiving the Global Finance Best Bank Award 2025. The bank also won KPMG’s Best Bank in SME Customer Experience award.

These awards suggest that the bank’s market positioning is being recognised not only in balance sheet terms but also in service delivery and customer experience.

The bank also highlighted its sustainability work through the “A Sandal More for a Better Tomorrow” initiative, which distributed more than 31,000 sandals made from recycled tyres nationwide and supported more than 500 shoemakers in the Ashanti Region.

The initiative reinforces the growing importance of environmental, social and governance priorities in banking. Increasingly, banks are expected to demonstrate impact beyond lending and profitability.

For Access Bank Ghana, the sustainability programme links environmental reuse, community support and local enterprise development.

The bank’s 2025 performance comes at a time when Ghana’s financial sector is benefiting from improving macroeconomic signals. Inflation has eased, economic activity is recovering and credit demand is gradually strengthening.

These conditions provide a more supportive backdrop for banks to grow earnings. However, competition remains intense, and customers are increasingly demanding digital convenience, better pricing and more responsive service.

Access Bank Ghana’s expanded balance sheet gives it a strong platform, but the next stage will require execution.

Management must now show that the bank can grow profitably, control costs, maintain credit discipline and improve returns on assets and equity.
