- Accra Psychiatric Hospital Gets ICT Boost from GCB Employees
Employees of GCB Bank PLC have provided new information and communication technology equipment to the Accra Psychiatric Hospital in an intervention aimed at improving patient record management, administrative efficiency and staff capacity at one of Ghana’s key specialist mental-health facilities.
The support, led by members of the bank’s Internal Audit team, involved the donation of six Dell OptiPlex computers and two colour printers following an assessment that identified ageing and slow computer systems as a constraint on the hospital’s operations.
The equipment is expected to support patient records, data processing, reporting, staff training and other administrative functions that are central to the day-to-day operation of the facility.
GCB said the intervention was developed after members of its Internal Audit team engaged the hospital’s Administrative Officer and Estate Manager to better understand its operational needs.
Those discussions revealed that outdated computers were slowing administrative processes and creating difficulties around the management of patient information. The hospital also lacked access to a colour printer, adding to the constraints faced by staff carrying out routine reporting and documentation.
The intervention is expected to benefit approximately 700 people, comprising about 600 patients and 100 members of staff.
By strengthening the hospital’s ICT resources, GCB expects the equipment to contribute to more efficient service delivery and improve the institution’s broader operational capacity.
The project reflects a growing recognition that healthcare delivery depends not only on clinical infrastructure but also on the administrative and information systems that support patient care.
In specialist health facilities, reliable records and efficient reporting processes are particularly important because they help healthcare professionals maintain continuity of care, monitor patients and coordinate administrative functions.
Sadat Laminu, Head of Corporate Affairs at GCB Bank, said the project demonstrates the wider objective of the bank’s Staff Community Impact Programme, which encourages employees to identify and respond to practical needs within communities and public institutions.
“SCIP gives our employees the opportunity to extend their impact beyond the workplace by supporting institutions and communities where their skills and resources can make a meaningful difference,” he said.
“Mental health remains an important aspect of overall wellbeing, and through this intervention, our employees are contributing to an institution that plays a vital role in providing specialised care and support to many Ghanaians. This is the kind of practical and sustainable social impact that SCIP seeks to deliver.”
For the Internal Audit team, the decision to focus on ICT was intended to respond directly to an operational gap rather than provide generic support.
Emmanuel Ayikwei Sackey, Head of Internal Audit at GCB Bank and a member of the project team, said the need became clear during discussions with hospital management.
“Our discussions with hospital staff highlighted the challenges they faced in carrying out routine administrative tasks using ageing equipment,” he said.
“We recognised that providing reliable computers and printers could make an immediate difference in areas such as patient record management, reporting and staff development.”
He added that the team intends to maintain its relationship with the hospital by providing professional guidance on how the equipment is used and maintained to ensure that the intervention delivers value over a longer period.
That follow-up component is important because technology donations can lose their impact quickly when institutions lack maintenance systems or support for users.
GCB said the Internal Audit team will therefore remain periodically engaged with the hospital to offer advice on equipment utilisation and sustainability. Proper maintenance and responsible use are expected to help extend the lifespan of the computers and printers.
Receiving the equipment on behalf of the hospital, Emmanuel Hanson Torde, Deputy Director of Administration, expressed appreciation to GCB Bank and its Internal Audit team for responding to what he described as a critical operational need.
He said the donated equipment would support administrative processes and improve staff efficiency.
The Accra Psychiatric Hospital intervention forms part of GCB Bank’s 2026 Staff Community Impact Programme, an employee-led initiative involving more than 4,500 staff organised into 95 groups to implement 95 projects across Ghana between August and September.
The programme covers healthcare, education, water and sanitation, social protection, environmental sustainability, youth development, community safety and infrastructure, with the collective projects intended to reach up to one million people.
The hospital project is the 20th of the 95 initiatives being implemented under the programme.
Through SCIP, employees contribute their time, skills, resources and collective effort to community projects, with GCB positioning the initiative as a way of strengthening volunteerism across the bank while extending the social impact of its staff beyond their formal workplace roles.
For the Accra Psychiatric Hospital, the immediate value of the intervention will be measured in faster administrative processes, more reliable patient information management and improved staff productivity.
The longer-term significance, however, lies in whether modest improvements in digital infrastructure can help strengthen the efficiency of a specialist institution that serves a critical role in Ghana’s mental-health system.
