AfCFTA: Commercially viable trade to commence after launch of Guided Trade Initiative
The Secretariat of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and the National AfCFTA Coordination Office, are set to launch the AfCFTA Guided Trade Initiative on Friday, October 7, 2022.
The launch of the AfCFTA Guided Trade Initiative, the National AfCFTA Coordination Office, in a statement issued on Tuesday, October 3, 2022, said will symbolise the commencement of commercially viable trade between eight countries on a pilot basis.
The eight countries selected for the trade pilot include: Ghana, Cameroon, Egypt, Kenya, Mauritius, Rwanda, Tanzania and Tunisia.
According to the National AfCFTA Coordination Office, the AfCFTA Guided Trade Initiative among others, aims to test the readiness of participating state parties under the AfCFTA as well as demonstrate that the AfCFTA trading documentations are operational and viable.
It is to also confirm that the Customs and Revenue Authorities of the participating state parties are ready to process imports and exports.
“The Guided Trade Initiative is a very significant step towards realising the African dream of boosting trade with each other and developing closer economic ties among state parties,” read parts of the statement.
Under the Guided Trade Initiative, Ghana’s Keda Ceramics and Benso Oil Palm Plantation will export ceramic tiles and palm kernel to Cameroon and Kenya respectively.
In turn, Ghana will also receive approved goods from Cameroon and Kenya.
