  • Alcaraz And Shelton Set for Blockbuster US Open Quarter-Final in New York

Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz will face American eighth seed Ben Shelton in one of the most anticipated quarter-finals of the 2026 US Open after both players produced commanding straight-sets victories to reach the last eight in New York. The meeting brings together Alcaraz’s variety, experience and defensive skills against Shelton’s explosive left-handed serve and aggressive baseline game.

Alcaraz booked his place with a 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 victory over American Tommy Paul on Sunday, September 6, producing what the source described as his most convincing performance of the tournament. The world number two has now reached the US Open quarter-finals for the third time since 2021 as he attempts to successfully defend his title.

His run has carried additional significance because of the injury concerns surrounding his return to Grand Slam competition. The 23-year-old missed almost five months of tennis with a wrist injury and sat out both the French Open and Wimbledon, but his performances in New York have so far offered few indications that the layoff has substantially diminished his game.

Against Paul, Alcaraz’s serve and forehand provided the foundations for a controlled performance that kept the American under sustained pressure. His ability to dictate points without sacrificing his trademark movement will be particularly important against Shelton, whose power can quickly shorten rallies and alter the rhythm of a match.

Shelton arrives in the quarter-final with considerable momentum of his own after dismantling former world number three Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-2, 6-3, 6-4 in just one hour and 51 minutes. The American did not face a single break point during the match, controlling proceedings with his serve and maintaining an aggressive approach from the opening set.

The victory takes Shelton into the US Open quarter-finals for the first time since 2023 and keeps alive American hopes of ending a long wait for a home men’s singles champion. His performance was particularly notable because he had required four sets to win each of his opening three matches before producing his most complete display against Tsitsipas.

Shelton’s 2026 season has otherwise been uneven. He reached the Australian Open quarter-finals but suffered earlier exits at other Grand Slam events, although his form on hard courts has strengthened and his combination of serve and forehand gives him the weapons to trouble even the strongest opponents.

History, however, favours Alcaraz. The Spaniard leads their head-to-head 3-0, having beaten Shelton in Toronto in 2023, at the Laver Cup in 2024 and at the 2025 French Open, where their fourth-round meeting went four sets.

That record gives Alcaraz a psychological advantage, but the conditions in New York could make this encounter substantially different. Shelton’s left-handed serve can immediately place opponents under pressure, while his willingness to attack early and take aggressive returns offers a route to preventing Alcaraz from establishing control over longer rallies.

Alcaraz nevertheless possesses a broader range of tactical options. His ability to absorb pace, change the tempo of rallies, defend from difficult positions and rapidly transition into attack could prove decisive if Shelton is unable to dominate consistently with his first serve.

Fitness will also remain part of the contest’s narrative. Alcaraz’s wrist has come through his first four matches without the injury derailing his campaign, but Shelton’s heavy hitting could provide the most sustained physical test of the Spaniard’s comeback so far.

For Alcaraz, the quarter-final carries historical significance beyond reaching another Grand Slam semi-final. Victory would move him closer to becoming the first man since Roger Federer in 2008 to successfully defend the US Open men’s singles title, adding another milestone to a career already defined by success at the sport’s biggest tournaments.

For Shelton, the stakes are equally substantial. An upset would represent one of the biggest victories of his career and preserve the possibility of an American men’s champion at Flushing Meadows for the first time since Andy Roddick won the tournament in 2003.

The match therefore offers more than a contrast of playing styles. Alcaraz is seeking to prove that his injury layoff has not interrupted his ability to dominate at Grand Slam level, while Shelton has an opportunity to demonstrate that his enormous physical weapons can translate into victory against one of the sport’s elite players on its biggest stage.

Alcaraz enters with experience, variety and an unbeaten record against the American; Shelton counters with home support, one of the most dangerous serves in the tournament and growing confidence after a dominant fourth-round performance. With a semi-final place at stake, their New York meeting has all the ingredients to become one of the defining matches of this year’s US Open.
