Alcaraz Targets Full Clay-Court Campaign Ahead of Roland Garros Defence
World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz has set his sights on a complete European clay-court season for the first time in his career, declaring his excitement at returning to his favourite surface as he prepares to defend his French Open title.
Speaking in Monaco on Sunday, the Spaniard said it “feels amazing” to be back on clay after months away, revealing plans to compete in a packed schedule that includes the Monte Carlo Masters, Barcelona Open, Madrid Open, and the Italian Open.
Alcaraz, who begins his Monte Carlo title defence next week, admitted he has long missed the unique demands of clay courts.
“I miss clay every time the season is over,” he said. “It’s been a long time since French Open that I haven’t touched clay. When I got back to practice, I told my team, ‘It’s time to get to the dirty socks again.’”
The 22-year-old enjoyed a dominant 2025 clay season, lifting titles in Monte Carlo and Rome. His only defeat on the surface came in the Barcelona final against Holger Rune, underlining his consistency on the red dirt.
Despite his success, Alcaraz has never completed the full clay swing, often managing his workload carefully. This year, however, he is determined to test his limits—though he acknowledges the physical and mental toll.
“That’s my idea,” he explained. “The clay season is really demanding, physically and mentally. Maybe Barcelona is the week I should rest—but it’s such a special tournament for me.”
The Barcelona Open holds personal significance for Alcaraz, who grew up competing there as a junior and still relishes playing in front of home fans and friends.
As the top seed in Monte Carlo, Alcaraz has received a first-round bye and will open his campaign against either Stan Wawrinka or Sebastian Baez in the second round.
The prospect of facing Wawrinka, a three-time Grand Slam champion nearing the end of his career, particularly excites the Spaniard.
“It’s incredible to still see him around,” Alcaraz said. “I hope I get the chance to play him at least once and say I faced a legend like Stan.”
