  • Anthony Joshua-Tyson Fury Blockbuster Confirmed for December 11 in Cardiff

Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury will finally meet in one of the most anticipated contests in modern heavyweight boxing, with their long-awaited fight confirmed for December 11 at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, Wales.

The announcement brings an end to years of unsuccessful negotiations, postponements and contractual complications that repeatedly prevented the two former world heavyweight champions from sharing a professional ring.

The Welsh Rugby Union and Principality Stadium confirmed that the contest would headline what is expected to be one of the world’s biggest sporting events of 2026. Netflix will stream the fight globally, extending its move into live sports and giving the bout access to hundreds of millions of subscribers.

The fight is expected to take place in the early hours of December 12 in the United Kingdom to accommodate viewers in the United States, although some operational and licensing arrangements remain to be completed.

Cardiff Council said the event remained subject to the necessary licence, particularly given the proposed late-night schedule. The main event is expected to follow a full evening of boxing at the venue.

Joshua and Fury are scheduled to appear at a press conference on September 30, when promoters are expected to disclose further details about ticket sales, the supporting card and the precise timing of the ring walks.

Cardiff emerged as the preferred venue after New York, Jeddah and London were considered during negotiations.

Madison Square Garden had been strongly discussed as a possible host, partly because a New York event would have been easier to schedule for an American prime-time audience. Joshua’s contractual insistence that the contest be staged in the United Kingdom, however, proved decisive.

Wembley Stadium was another possible venue, but staging an outdoor event in London during December presented difficulties involving weather, scheduling and late-night operating restrictions.

Principality Stadium offered a practical compromise. Its closable roof makes it suitable for a winter event, while its large capacity and central location provide the atmosphere expected for an all-British heavyweight contest.

The venue can accommodate up to 80,000 spectators, depending on the event configuration, and has previously hosted major boxing contests involving Joshua.

Cardiff officials expect the fight to attract visitors from across the United Kingdom and overseas, providing a considerable boost for hotels, restaurants, transport operators and other businesses.

For more than a decade, Joshua and Fury have stood at the centre of British heavyweight boxing.

Both men became two-time world heavyweight champions, sold out major stadiums and built global followings. Yet their careers repeatedly moved in different directions whenever a fight between them appeared close.

An agreement was reached in 2021, but the contest collapsed after an arbitration ruling required Fury to face Deontay Wilder for a third time. Joshua subsequently lost his unified heavyweight titles to Oleksandr Usyk, while Fury later suffered consecutive defeats to the Ukrainian.

The rivalry survived the loss of their world titles and undefeated records because it was never based solely on championship belts. It became a contest over reputation, legacy and the question of which fighter defined Britain’s heavyweight era.

Fury returned from his latest retirement in April 2026 and defeated Arslanbek Makhmudov on points, with Joshua watching from ringside. Joshua later faced Kristian Prenga in July, recovering from two first-round knockdowns before securing a second-round knockout.

Those comeback fights cleared one of the final sporting obstacles to the December meeting.

The significance of the fight lies partly in its timing.

Joshua, 36, and Fury, 38, are approaching the final stages of their careers. Neither man currently holds a world championship, and the contest will not determine an undisputed heavyweight champion.

Yet commercially and culturally, it could eclipse many title fights.

The bout offers both fighters an opportunity to secure a defining victory over the opponent with whom each has been compared for most of his career. For the winner, it could provide the final and most memorable chapter of a distinguished career. For the loser, it may shape how an entire era is remembered.

The contrast in styles will add to the intrigue. Joshua brings disciplined combinations, athletic power and a conventional heavyweight structure. Fury offers size, movement, adaptability and an ability to disrupt an opponent’s rhythm.

Neither boxer is at the physical peak that first fuelled public demands for the contest, but their age may make the meeting more unpredictable. Both have endured defeats, retirements, injuries and difficult comebacks.

Joshua’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, credited the British public with helping to keep the fight in the United Kingdom after competing proposals emerged from overseas promoters.

The decision to stage the contest in Wales also restores an important part of its identity. After years in which many of boxing’s biggest heavyweight events moved to Saudi Arabia and the United States, Joshua-Fury will be fought before a predominantly British crowd.

Turki Alalshikh, one of the central figures behind the negotiations, described the pairing as a meeting of two of the outstanding heavyweights of their generation and predicted that it would become one of boxing’s biggest events.

After years of promises that produced no fight, the confirmation changes the conversation.

The question is no longer whether Joshua and Fury will ever meet.

It is which of Britain’s two defining heavyweights will leave Cardiff with the victory that settles their rivalry and perhaps their respective places in boxing history.
