- Arsenal Slump to 3-1 Defeat Against Real Betis as Arteta Admits Standards Were Not Met
Arsenal suffered their first defeat of pre-season after Real Betis punished a succession of defensive and midfield errors to secure a 3-1 victory at Dublin’s Aviva Stadium, leaving manager Mikel Arteta with fresh concerns ahead of the Premier League champions’ return to competitive action.
The Gunners fell behind after only nine minutes when goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga failed to claim a corner, allowing Rodrigo Riquelme to score unmarked at the far post. Nelson Deossa doubled Betis’ advantage in the 26th minute with a powerful long-range effort before Piero Hincapie pulled one back six minutes later from a Christos Tzolis corner.
Any prospect of an Arsenal comeback was quickly undermined by another costly mistake.
A misplaced Kai Havertz pass allowed Betis to attack again before Pablo Fornals found the bottom corner in the 43rd minute, restoring the Spanish side’s two-goal advantage before half-time.
The defeat was Arsenal’s first in three pre-season games following a 3-0 victory over MK Dons and a 4-1 win away against Girona. They are due to face Borussia Dortmund and Como before meeting Manchester City in the Community Shield on August 16.
Arteta was blunt in his assessment of the performance.
“We didn’t compete to our standards,” he said after a match in which Arsenal showed periods of decent possession but repeatedly allowed Betis to exploit errors around their penalty area.
“The first half, we wanted two different things play well and compete well. We did the first one quite well in a lot of moments. But the compete part, especially in and around our box, was not at our standards to win a football match against a good side.”
Arsenal were not simply beaten because Betis were more polished in possession. They were punished because their mistakes occurred in high-risk areas and Betis converted those opportunities ruthlessly.
Kepa’s failure to deal with the opening corner created the first goal. Two further giveaways close to Arsenal’s box contributed to the wider sense of vulnerability, with Arteta himself acknowledging that his side had been too loose in decisive areas.
For a team preparing to defend a Premier League title, those lapses matter even in pre-season.
Friendly results themselves carry limited competitive importance, but the nature of the errors can be more informative than the scoreline. Arsenal’s concern will be that several of the goals came from situations that are normally central to Arteta’s defensive principles: concentration at set pieces, secure build-up play and protection against turnovers.
“It’s always good when you lose a match in pre-season, it creates a bit more fire in the belly,” he said. “It’s better to give those goals away in a friendly match than an official match.”
Arsenal still have time to correct mistakes before competitive football begins, and the side that started in Dublin was far from the complete team Arteta is expected to field once the season is fully under way.
Several senior players were still unavailable following World Cup involvement, including Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard, while Gabriel and Gabriel Martinelli were introduced only after half-time for their first appearances of pre-season.
Arteta made seven changes at the interval as he continued to distribute minutes across the squad. That rotation inevitably complicates any attempt to draw definitive tactical conclusions from the defeat.
Arsenal again used Myles Lewis-Skelly, Ethan Nwaneri and Havertz together, but the trio found it substantially more difficult against Betis than they had against Girona.
Lewis-Skelly completed 70 of his 74 passes and showed composure in possession, yet Arsenal lacked the defensive security normally associated with Rice or Martin Zubimendi. Sky Sports’ analysis argued that the performance highlighted why Arsenal have pursued Newcastle midfielder Bruno Guimaraes so aggressively, with the club having agreed a £75 million fee for the Brazil international.
Arsenal already possess technical midfielders capable of retaining possession and progressing the ball. Their challenge is ensuring the structure remains sufficiently robust when possession is lost.
The Spanish side repeatedly found ways to attack space after turnovers, while Arsenal’s own possession did not translate into sustained control of the dangerous moments.
It was an unusually open performance from an Arteta team. That will likely concern the manager more than losing a friendly.
At their best, Arsenal have built much of their recent success on control: limiting transitions, maintaining territorial dominance and forcing opponents to create from difficult positions.
Betis instead found opportunities in exactly the areas Arsenal normally protect.
The second half was more stable but produced little attacking reward.
Gabriel and Martinelli increased the senior presence in the team, while Illan Meslier later made a close-range save from Isco after Betis cut through Arsenal’s defensive structure again. Gabriel Jesus had one of Arsenal’s better chances after being set up by Martinelli but fired wide.
There was also an injury concern when youngster Louie Copley was forced off in the 55th minute with what Sky Sports described as a serious-looking knee problem.
For Arteta, the result therefore offered an unusually dense collection of pre-season lessons.
There were defensive errors to correct, midfield balance to refine and further evidence that the squad is not yet operating at full competitive intensity.
The team remains incomplete, several major players are still being reintegrated and pre-season is designed specifically to expose weaknesses before league points are at stake.
The next two friendlies will provide Arsenal with a chance to establish greater rhythm before the Community Shield.
More importantly, they will help Arteta assess how quickly his returning players and potential new signings can restore the control that was missing in Dublin.
The 3-1 defeat should not be overstated. Pre-season results can be misleading and have little direct relationship with how a team ultimately performs once the league begins.
Betis did not need sustained domination to hurt Arsenal. They simply punished the champions every time they lost concentration in dangerous areas.
For a team preparing to defend its title, that is precisely the kind of warning pre-season is supposed to provide.
