Bawumia commends MTN’s role in Ghana’s digital acceleration efforts
MTN Ghana, a leading telecommunications company, recently played host to the Board of Directors of the MTN Group for a high-profile strategy session in Accra. The two-day event brought together key executives, including Mcebisi Hubert Jonas, the MTN Group Board Chairman, and Ralph Mupita, the MTN Group President and Chief Executive Officer, to deliberate on strategic priorities and engage stakeholders in Ghana.
Under the theme of “Strategic Partnerships and Shared Value,” the MTN Group’s retreat served as a platform to recognize and reaffirm the organization’s commitment to its stakeholders and the partnerships forged over the years. A notable highlight of the engagements was a Stakeholder Dinner hosted by MTN Ghana, attended by a diverse range of private and public sector stakeholders, including esteemed Ministers of State and prominent leaders of State institutions.
The special guest of honor, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, delivered a commendation to MTN for its instrumental role in accelerating Ghana’s digitalization efforts. He lauded the Ghanaian government’s commitment to structural transformation across traditional and non-traditional sectors, emphasizing the need for smart investments in cutting-edge technologies and critical infrastructure to enhance global competitiveness. Dr. Bawumia specifically acknowledged the significance of partnerships with organizations like MTN in driving Ghana’s socio-economic development.
In his address, Mcebisi Hubert Jonas, the MTN Group Board Chair, shed light on the prevailing global challenges, geopolitical uncertainties, and the profound impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on businesses. He stressed the cruciality of long-term partnerships between governments and companies like MTN to spur growth and innovation across the African continent. Mr. Jonas called for a paradigm shift in perceiving corporations as mere sources of tax revenue, advocating instead for collaborative partnership models that align public and private sector interests while safeguarding shareholder value.
Echoing this sentiment, Dr. Ishmael Yamson, the Board Chairman of MTN Ghana, emphasized the indispensability of a robust and positive collaborative relationship between the government and the business community to foster sustainable growth. He highlighted the symbiotic nature of the relationship between business and society, where responsible and profitable enterprises play a vital role in the long-term well-being of the communities they serve.
The MTN Group Board members also took part in field visits to gain firsthand insights into the daily operations of customer agents and to engage traders and customers utilizing MTN’s services. These visits aimed to familiarize the Board with market dynamics while soliciting valuable feedback from stakeholders.
MTN’s visit to Ghana aligns with its Ambition 2025 strategy, which places great emphasis on creating shared value. By fostering collaborations and partnerships in the countries where it operates, MTN aims to underline the collective effort required to achieve sustainable socio-economic growth.
As MTN Group’s Board Strategy session concluded in Accra, it became evident that the telecommunications giant remains committed to nurturing strategic partnerships and driving shared value.
