betPawa GPL: Oda Kotoku Royals relegated after defeat to Great Olympics
Kotoku Royals have been confirmed as the first team to be relegated from the Ghana Premier League after suffering a 2-0 defeat to fellow strugglers Great Olympics.
The match, which took place at Sogakope Park, saw Isaac Mensah and Michael Osei score in the 44th and 55th minutes respectively to secure a crucial victory for Great Olympics, who had lost to Bibiani Gold Stars in their previous fixture.
Kotoku Royals have no chance of escaping relegation as they are now 15 points below the safe spot on the table.
Even if they win their remaining four matches, they would only have 35 points, which is still less than King Faisal’s total. As a result, John Edufu’s men will finish at the bottom of the table at the end of the season, regardless of the outcome of their remaining matches.
The demotion of Kotoku Royals is a huge disappointment for the football community in the Eastern region of Ghana, who had hoped to see more of their native clubs play in the top flight after the club’s promotion last season.
The club have blamed their unsuccessful season on failed political promises, which were made after the representative from the region, Power FC, was demoted in 2007.
