  • Brussels Airlines Expands Nordic Network With New Arctic Winter Routes

Brussels Airlines is expanding its winter network with scheduled passenger services to three destinations in Norway and Finland, betting on growing demand for Arctic holidays and winter tourism across northern Europe. The Belgian carrier will add Evenes in Norway and Kemi and Kittilä in Finland to its timetable, moving beyond its existing charter operations in the region and giving travellers direct access to destinations associated with northern lights, winter landscapes and outdoor tourism.

The new services will be introduced during the 2026-2027 winter season, with Kittilä receiving the highest frequency. Brussels Airlines plans to operate the Finnish destination three times a week between December 10 and March 27, while Kemi will receive up to two weekly flights between December 25 and March 10.

Evenes, which serves northern Norway’s Nordland region, will be operated once a week during February and March. The differentiated schedules suggest Brussels Airlines is tailoring capacity closely to seasonal leisure demand rather than pursuing year-round expansion into the three markets.

The move represents an extension of a market the airline has already been serving through charter flights organised in partnership with travel agencies. By introducing scheduled passenger services, Brussels Airlines is effectively opening the destinations to independent travellers while retaining its charter relationships, broadening the commercial base from which it can fill aircraft during the winter season.

“The arctic region in winter is no-less than magical,” said Greet Vandebos, Head of Leisure Sales at Brussels Airlines. “Brussels Airlines has been offering these winter wonderland destinations in cooperation with travel agencies, but as demand grows, flights to the region will from now on also be offered as scheduled passenger flights, allowing travellers even more choice to discover outdoor adventures and distinctive local culture.”

The strategy reflects the increasing importance of leisure travel in airline network planning, particularly for routes capable of generating strong seasonal demand outside the traditional summer peak. Arctic destinations have become attractive to travellers seeking northern lights, snow activities and nature-based holidays, allowing airlines to deploy capacity into markets with distinctive seasonal appeal.

Kittilä and Kemi provide Brussels Airlines with greater exposure to Finnish Lapland, a region whose winter tourism proposition centres on snow-based activities, natural landscapes and Arctic experiences. Evenes, meanwhile, provides access to Nordland in northern Norway, giving the carrier a complementary destination within a broader Nordic leisure portfolio.

For Brussels Airlines, the economics of the expansion will depend heavily on its ability to maintain strong load factors during relatively concentrated operating periods. Seasonal routes can be commercially attractive because capacity is deployed when demand is strongest, but their profitability remains sensitive to aircraft utilisation, pricing, tour-operator relationships and the ability to attract sufficient independent travellers alongside packaged holiday traffic.

The addition of scheduled flights could help reduce some of that dependence on tour operators by allowing customers to book directly through the airline’s regular distribution channels. It also gives Brussels Airlines greater flexibility to market the destinations individually, rather than limiting access principally to travellers purchasing packages through partner agencies.

The expansion also illustrates how airlines are increasingly using niche leisure destinations to diversify their networks. Rather than relying exclusively on major European cities, carriers can use highly seasonal routes to capture travellers willing to spend more on experience-based holidays, particularly where the destination offers an attraction difficult to replicate elsewhere.

Nordland and Lapland fit that model because their winter appeal is closely linked to natural conditions and distinctive local experiences, including opportunities to observe the northern lights. The destinations therefore give Brussels Airlines a product that differs considerably from conventional city-break routes and could help strengthen its position in the European leisure market.

The challenge will be converting growing interest in Arctic travel into sustainable route economics across an entire winter season. Frequency decisions already suggest a measured approach, with three weekly flights to Kittilä but more limited capacity to Kemi and Evenes, allowing the airline to test demand while controlling the risk of oversupply.

For Brussels Airlines, the three new routes represent a relatively targeted expansion rather than a fundamental overhaul of its network. They nevertheless demonstrate how changing travel preferences are opening commercial opportunities in destinations that were once served mainly through specialist tour operators and charter programmes.

If passenger demand develops as anticipated, the Nordic expansion could give the airline scope to deepen its presence in Arctic tourism over subsequent winters. For now, the addition of Evenes, Kemi and Kittilä signals that Brussels Airlines sees winter leisure travel as an increasingly important part of its network strategy.
